Front Royal
We begin today on South Royal Avenue in Front Royal, Virginia, a historic town known as the "Canoe Capital of Virginia," which sits at the confluence of the Shenandoah River's North and South Forks, providing a scenic backdrop for outdoor recreation and serving as a key access point to the park via the Front Royal Entrance Station on Skyline Drive.

The town has a rich history connected to the establishment of the park in the 1930s during the Great Depression. When Shenandoah National Park was created, many local families were displaced as the federal government acquired land to establish the park, fostering a lasting connection between Front Royal and the park’s heritage.

Front Royal benefits economically from the park’s tourism, attracting visitors year-round for hiking, wildlife viewing, and leaf-peeping during the fall foliage season. The town offers a variety of accommodations, from cozy bed-and-breakfasts to larger hotels, catering to park visitors.

In addition to park access, Front Royal is known for its proximity to outdoor activities such as canoeing, fishing, and hiking along the Shenandoah River and George Washington National Forest, complementing the park experience.
The town hosts annual events celebrating its connection to nature and history, such as the Virginia Wine and Craft Festival and the Front Royal Canoe Race, drawing both locals and visitors.

A good place to gas up and get snacks is the 7-Eleven approaching on the right. If you have everything you need, proceed to Stonewall Jackson Highway and the entrance to the park.
