The Ritz-Carlton
Welcome to the first place on our tour! The Ritz-Carlton Hotel! Known for its luxurious accommodations and impeccable service, it is a symbol of opulence and sophistication. In the film, Julia Roberts plays Anna Scott, a famous American actress who falls in love with a humble London bookseller, William Thacker, portrayed by Hugh Grant.
After their initial meeting, Anna calls William and invites him to her hotel, The Ritz! This is when William is arriving at the hotel, expecting an intimate one on one date with Anna, but as he makes her way to the room number he was given, another man is headed in the same direction. It is then discovered that Anna is in the middle of a press conference with many different magazine reporters to discuss her new movie. William quickly pretends he is a reporter from “Horse & Hound” but is able to spend some time with Anna. The Ritz is also the location of when Anna finally invites William up to her room after their first official date, but when getting there her boyfriend, played by Alec Baldwin is there. Confused and upset, William has to pretend he is room service creating an unfortunate situation between the two.
The Ritz-Carlton is not only just a magnificent filming location, with its beautiful grandeur, but it also underscores the juxtaposition of different worlds colliding. Anna Scott, a rich and famous celebrity, and William Thacker, a bookstore owner who can barely make ends meet. These different scenes, all taking place at one of the most well-known high end hotels, highlight the contrast between William’s ordinary life in Notting Hill and Anna’s glamorous, high-profile existence.

Nobu
Perhaps not the most easily identifiable filming location from Notting Hill, but Nobu Sushi Restaurant is the site for one of the iconic scenes in the film. Nobu is another well-known high-end location, with exquisite cuisine and many dollar signs under its name on Yelp. But, inside these walls is where Anna and William had their first ever one on one date!
Remember? Anna and William are sitting at a table in a very crowded restaurant, and Anna is sitting with her back against a wall. William is on the other side and can see past the wall, where a group of men are sitting and talking together. At first, they are discussing different actors and Anna’s name inevitably comes into conversation. The men are going back and forth about who their favorites are and making light-hearted comments, making Anna smile and laugh to herself. Until, the men start to make crass jokes about her, making her and William uncomfortable. William storms to the table to confront the men, but it does not do a whole lot. But, right before the couple heads out, Anna makes an impulsive decision and walks up to the men and chews them out, they were stunned!
This scene solidified the kind of person Anna is, and only makes William like her even more. It was a fantastic moment of crossing the celebrity to a normal individual, allowing us to also see her as more than an actress. Such a wonderful scene ending!
We are going to take a quick break from all things Notting Hill, as we are now going to begin our walk through Hyde Park, follow the directions and I will see you at our next place! I promise Notting Hill will come back into play, but this way we can learn about the film and a bit about London too.
