About this English self-guided 59m driving tour in Santa Rosa
Welcome to Santa Rosa, the dynamic heart of Sonoma County and one of Northern California’s most inviting small cities. Today’s tour will guide you through the landscapes, neighborhoods, and landmarks that define this community — a place shaped by creativity, agriculture, and a deep connection to the natural world. Santa Rosa blends a lively urban core with quiet parks, historic districts, and pockets of wild beauty that stretch right into the hills. It’s a city of artists and innovators, from Charles M. Schulz sketching Snoopy at his favorite ice rink to horticultural pioneer Luther Burbank cultivating plants that would one day circle the globe.
As we make our way through its museums, gardens, and historic squares, you’ll see how Santa Rosa’s character has been forged over generations — resilient in the face of earthquakes and fires, proud of its agricultural roots, and continually reinventing itself as a cultural and recreational hub. Whether you’re exploring tranquil lakeside paths, strolling streets where early settlers once traded goods, or passing the vineyards that now define the region, Santa Rosa offers a sense of place that is both grounded and welcoming.
And while our journey begins firmly here in the city, it will eventually carry us down the Sonoma Highway and into Sonoma Valley — where rolling hills and endless vineyards await. But for now, settle in as we discover the many layers of Santa Rosa, one stop at a time.
Welcome to Santa Rosa, and what better place to begin our journey than at one of the city’s most beloved landmarks: the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, affectionately known as Snoopy’s Home Ice. Built in 1969 by Charles M. Schulz himself, this charming chalet-style rink is where generations of locals have learned to skate, cheer on hockey games, and sip hot cocoa beneath its soaring redwood beams. Schulz skated here almost daily, finding both exercise and inspiration on the ice. Even today, the arena feels like a living extension of the Peanuts universe — warm, nostalgic, and unmistakably joyful. If you hear the scrape of skates or the thump of a puck while we're here, that’s just Santa Rosa saying hello.
Right next door sits the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, our next highlight and a true treasure for fans of art, storytelling, and American pop culture. The museum opened in 2002 as a tribute to the man who created one of the most recognizable comic strips on Earth. Inside, you’ll find original Peanuts drawings, rare sketches, themed galleries that rotate throughout the year, and a towering tile mural made from 3,588 individual comic strips. It’s a space that captures Schulz’s gentle humor, his discipline as an artist, and his keen eye for the human heart — all seen through the antics of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, and the gang.
Together, the arena and the museum form the cultural heart of north Santa Rosa, celebrating the creativity and community spirit that shaped this region. From here, we’ll begin our drive through the landscapes, parks, and neighborhoods that inspired Schulz and continue to inspire visitors today. Ready? Let’s roll.
Please turn right and then take a left on Dutton Avenue while I give you a short Santa Rosa history lesson.
Santa Rosa’s history unfolds like a layered California tapestry, woven from Native heritage, Spanish settlement, agricultural innovation, and modern creativity. Long before towns or highways appeared, the Santa Rosa Plain was home to the Southern Pomo and Wappo peoples, who lived along the creeks and oak woodlands, harvesting acorns and weaving baskets renowned for their artistry. Their deep relationship with the land shaped the region for thousands of years.
In the early 1800s, Spanish and later Mexican settlers established ranchos across Sonoma County, including the lands that would become Santa Rosa. After California joined the United States in 1850, the area began to grow around a small trading post along Santa Rosa Creek. By 1868, Santa Rosa was officially incorporated as a city, quickly becoming a hub for farming, livestock, and commerce. The arrival of the railroad strengthened its role as a gateway between the North Coast, the Bay Area, and inland valleys.
One of Santa Rosa’s most influential residents was Luther Burbank, the world-famous horticulturalist who moved here in 1875. His botanical experiments produced more than 800 plant varieties, from plums and potatoes to the Shasta daisy, earning Santa Rosa a reputation for agricultural innovation.
The city also endured hardship, including the devastating 1906 earthquake, which destroyed much of downtown. Yet Santa Rosa rebuilt, adopting resilient architecture and community planning.
In the 20th century, the city became known worldwide as the home of Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts. Today, Santa Rosa blends history, wine country culture, and artistic spirit, standing as both a modern destination and a reflection of California’s rich past.
