Historic Canal & Tavern
Welcome, history buffs, to the C&O Canal National Historical Park, specifically the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center! The parking lot is off to your right, so get parked and let's see some history! This isn't just a picturesque spot; it's a window into a pivotal era of American transportation. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, stretching 184.5 miles from Washington D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland, was a monumental undertaking designed to transport coal, lumber, and agricultural products from the Allegheny Mountains to the bustling ports of the capital. Construction began on July 4, 1828, with President John Quincy Adams famously turning the first spade of dirt.
This canal was a direct competitor to the B&O Railroad, which broke ground on the very same day, setting up a fascinating race for supremacy in transportation. For over 70 years, mule-drawn canal boats plied these waters, carrying goods and passengers. Imagine the scene: the rhythmic clip-clop of the mules, the slow glide of the boats, and the lively chatter of the lock keepers and boatmen. The Great Falls Tavern, where we are now, was a popular stop for passengers and a place for weary travelers to rest and refresh.
However, the canal faced constant challenges – floods, financial woes, and ultimately, the faster, more efficient railroads. Its last commercial boat trip was in 1924, and the canal officially closed in 1924 after a devastating flood. Today, it’s a beloved national park, preserved for recreation and education. You can walk or bike along the towpath, see the impressive locks, and perhaps even spot a mule-drawn boat replica in action during certain seasons. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance, and a reminder of how quickly technology can change the world.
Are you enjoying the beautiful scenery? Well, off to the right is Woodstock Equestrian Park, a sweeping stretch of farmland and woods that covers nearly 900 acres here in Montgomery County. From the road you can see some of the open pastures and historic farm buildings that hint at the park’s deep roots.
This land is especially popular with horseback riders, with about 16 miles of natural-surface trails winding through the property, plus an outdoor riding arena and even a cross-country course with jumps and water features. Hikers are welcome too, though bicycles aren’t allowed.
The park also has a fascinating history. Parts of it were once tied to George Washington’s holdings, and a number of 19th-century stone outbuildings still stand, reminders of the old Brewer Farm. One of the most striking landmarks is the Seneca Stone Barn, carefully restored and preserved as part of the park’s heritage.
And beyond horses and history, Woodstock is also a favorite with birdwatchers — more than 180 bird species have been spotted here. So while we won’t be turning in today, as we drive past, you’re getting a glimpse of one of Maryland’s most scenic and historic open spaces.
