Indianapolis City Market
Welcome to your very first stop on your right— the Indianapolis City Market! Since 1886, this marketplace has been at the heart of the city’s daily life, serving up everything from fresh produce and local meats to handmade goods and international bites. Step inside and you’ll feel the blend of history and modern energy: vaulted iron beams overhead, bustling food stalls below, and the unmistakable hum of a city gathering place that’s been thriving for well over a century.

Hungry? You’ll find just about everything here—artisan sandwiches, wood-fired pizza, craft beer, and international flavors from around the globe. Even if you’re not in the mood to eat, take time to explore. The Market is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its architectural character makes it just as photo-worthy as it is tasty.

And here’s a local secret: beneath your feet lie the Indianapolis Catacombs. These hidden underground passageways, left from the 19th century, are open for tours during the warmer months. If your timing is right, it’s a can’t-miss glimpse into Indy’s past.

Monument Circle
Welcome to Monument Circle—the beating heart of Indianapolis! This isn’t just a roundabout; it’s the very centerpiece of the city, designed back in 1821 by Alexander Ralston as “Governor’s Circle.” While no governor ever lived here, the idea of a central civic hub took root, and today every street in downtown Indy radiates from this point, making it both the literal and symbolic crossroads of the city.

At the center stands the towering Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a 284-foot tribute to Hoosier veterans. Around it, you’ll find some of Indy’s most treasured landmarks, including the Hilbert Circle Theatre, home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the historic Christ Church Cathedral. Built in 1857, this beautiful Gothic Revival church is the oldest building still standing on Monument Circle, with its limestone spire a striking contrast to the taller buildings that surround it.

By day, the Circle is alive with workers, shoppers, and visitors. By night—and especially during the holidays—it transforms into something magical. The annual Circle of Lights turns the monument into a glowing Christmas tree, drawing thousands downtown to celebrate.

From solemn memorials and historic churches to concerts, protests, and festivals, Monument Circle has always been where Indianapolis gathers. It’s not just a landmark—it’s the city’s living centerpiece.
