Monticello Main House
There we go! Now that's a bit better!

The Main House at Monticello is one of the most famous homes in the United States and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Designed and built by Thomas Jefferson as both a personal residence and a showcase of his architectural genius.

Jefferson, an avid architect and innovator, began designing Monticello in 1769, drawing inspiration from classical European styles, particularly Palladian architecture. Over the years, he redesigned and expanded the home, incorporating ideas he gathered during his time in France. The final version of Monticello, completed in the early 1800s, features a red-brick exterior, a white columned portico, and the famous octagonal dome—one of its most recognizable elements.

The interior of Monticello is just as impressive as its exterior, with rooms carefully designed to reflect Jefferson’s love of science, innovation, and classical design. The Entrance Hall – A grand space filled with maps, artifacts, and Native American objects, reflecting Jefferson’s interest in exploration and knowledge. Guests were welcomed here and given a glimpse into his intellectual pursuits. The Parlor – A formal room used for entertaining visitors and family gatherings. It features elegant furnishings, artwork, and musical instruments. The Library – Home to Jefferson’s vast collection of books, which he considered his “canvases of the mind.” He later sold much of this collection to form the foundation of the Library of Congress. And The Dome Room – Located beneath Monticello’s famous octagonal dome, this space was unique for its time and served various purposes over the years, though it was rarely used for daily activities.

Jefferson also filled Monticello with ingenious inventions and efficiency-focused designs like a hidden dumbwaiter to bring wine up from the cellar, a clock with a pulley system that tracked the days of the week, and beds built into alcoves to save space.

When you walk through the main house you can feel all of the work and effort that went into constructing the perfect space for Jefferson and his family. It’s amazing to be able to experience it the way they once did.

Now it's time to take a stroll around the beautiful West Lawn!
