About this English self-guided 1h:06m driving tour in Three Rivers
Sequoia National Park, located in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains of California, is a breathtaking natural treasure celebrated for its awe-inspiring landscapes and iconic giant sequoia trees. Established in 1890 as the second national park in the United States, it spans over 400,000 acres of diverse ecosystems, from low-elevation foothills to high alpine peaks.
The park's most famous attraction is the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree on Earth by volume, standing majestically in the Giant Forest among thousands of other sequoias. Visitors can explore a range of attractions, including cascading waterfalls, deep canyons, vast wilderness areas, and the rugged granite peaks of the Great Western Divide.
Adventurers are drawn to the park's network of trails, including those leading to Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States.
Sequoia National Park is also renowned for its biodiversity, offering sanctuary to a variety of wildlife, including black bears, mule deer, and numerous bird species. Coupled with neighboring Kings Canyon National Park, the area provides endless opportunities for exploration, stargazing, and connecting with the serenity of nature. Whether you're hiking, camping, or driving and simply taking in the beauty of these ancient giants, Sequoia National Park promises an unforgettable experience.
Up ahead is the primary gateway into the park. The Ash Mountain Entrance serves as a dramatic introduction to the park's diverse landscapes, transitioning from oak-studded foothills to towering sequoias and alpine vistas as you ascend.
Hard to miss, is the iconic Sequoia National Park sign. The sign was created in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a New Deal program that provided jobs during the Great Depression. The CCC was instrumental in developing much of the park’s early infrastructure, including roads, trails, and structures. The centerpiece of the sign is a detailed carving of a Native American chief's head. It honors the region's Indigenous history, particularly the Yokuts people, who have cultural ties to the land. Its design reflects the CCC's emphasis on preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the locations they worked in, often incorporating local materials and themes into their projects.
This is a great photo-op, especially with a parking lot right next to it! If you’d like to stop for a quick picture to commemorate the beginning of our amazing tour, then this is your time to shine!
On our right is the Foothills Visitor Center. This is an excellent place to learn more about the park.
Situated at a lower elevation in the foothill zone of the park, the center is surrounded by oak woodlands and chaparral, providing a stunning backdrop. Then once you step inside, you’ll be surrounded by Sequoia knowledge out the wazoo! From exhibits that focus on the ecology, geology, and human history of the park's lower elevations. Visitors can learn about wildlife, native plants, and the seasonal cycles of the region, to exhibits that highlight the history and traditions of the local Indigenous Yokuts tribes, including their connection to the land and its resources. There are of course park rangers always there to lend a helping hand, and answer any questions you may have. And before you head out you can stop at the gift shop and buy yourself a cute sweatshirt, you deserve it!
