Voici l'un des grands palais de la Renaissance de Rome (celui avec le drapeau français). C'est le Palazzo Farnese. Au 16e siècle, le palais a été construit par les nobles italiens de la famille Farnese pour montrer leur richesse nouvellement acquise.

Ne lésinant sur aucune dépense, ils ont engagé nul autre que Michel-Ange pour concevoir le bâtiment. Je suis sûr que vous feriez de même si l'argent n'était pas un problème ! Michel-Ange a mis l'accent sur la symétrie dans son travail et a veillé à ce que le balcon central soit l'élément central de la façade. C’est de là que les Farnese faisaient leurs discours à la foule rassemblée sur la piazza en dessous de vous.

Le design ingénieux de Michel-Ange, comprenant la fenêtre centrale agrandie et la ligne de toit saillante, est devenu le standard de l'architecture romaine depuis la Renaissance. Nous verrons de nombreux bâtiments qu'il a inspirés tout au long de notre visite.

Remarquez les pierres anciennes et rustiques près de la porte principale, les demi-colonnes (pilastres) incrustées dans la façade, les frontons triangulaires et arqués au-dessus des fenêtres, ainsi que la balustrade du balcon. Ce sont des éléments communs que vous pourrez repérer sur d'autres bâtiments le long du parcours. Gardez un œil attentif et vous deviendrez un expert en architecture de la Renaissance en un rien de temps !

Si vous vous demandez à propos des drapeaux français et de la présence de sécurité, le palais des Farnese abrite maintenant l'ambassade de France.

Les Romains aiment l'eau. Ils l'ont toujours adorée. Vous verrez de nombreuses fontaines spectaculaires lors de la visite d'aujourd'hui. Elles sont partout !

Depuis les temps anciens, les Romains pouvaient compter sur l'eau provenant des aqueducs municipaux, des merveilles de l'ingénierie civique antique, pour boire et se laver. Ces deux fontaines datent du troisième siècle et étaient autrefois des bassins dans les grands thermes publics de l'empereur Carcalla.

Les Romains adoraient prendre un bon bain presque autant qu'ils aimaient conquérir de nouvelles nations pour agrandir leur empire ! Les empereurs construisaient sans cesse de grandes œuvres publiques pour impressionner leurs citoyens et gagner leur amour, et les bains étaient un moyen populaire d'y parvenir.

L'eau qui coule de ces fontaines provient d'un ancien aqueduc romain, l'Acqua Vergine. Les Romains étaient tellement habiles en génie hydraulique que, même après presque deux millénaires, l'Acqua Vergine apporte encore de l'eau dans le cœur de la ville ! En fait, l'Acqua Vergine alimente presque toutes les fontaines que nous verrons aujourd'hui.

Maintenant, tournez le dos au palais et passez devant les fontaines. Marchez le long de la Via Dei Baullari pendant un bloc jusqu'à ce que vous arriviez à notre prochaine étape : le Campo de' Fiori, un marché public animé sur une petite place.
