Welcome to Old Mission Peninsula, one of the most beautiful corners of northern Michigan. Stretching north from Traverse City for about 18 miles, this narrow finger of land divides Grand Traverse Bay into its East and West Arms. And while the peninsula may be small, it packs an incredible amount into a relatively short drive — sparkling blue water, rolling hills, cherry orchards, vineyards, historic farms, wineries, quiet beaches, and a lighthouse waiting for us at the very tip. Old Mission also has a fascinating history. Long before the vineyards and vacation homes, this land was home to Anishinaabe communities. In the 1800s, missionaries and European-American settlers arrived, and the mission established here eventually gave the entire peninsula the name we know today. Agriculture would become another important part of the story. The surrounding waters of Grand Traverse Bay help moderate the peninsula's climate, creating excellent conditions for growing fruit. Cherries and apples flourished here, and more recently, vineyards have transformed parts of the landscape. Today, Old Mission Peninsula is an officially recognized American wine-growing region, particularly known for its cool-climate wines. Our journey will take us north through the heart and eastern side of the peninsula, passing orchards, vineyards, wineries, historic sites, and beautiful overlooks. We'll visit the historic Old Mission area before continuing all the way to Mission Point Lighthouse, where you'll have an opportunity to park, walk along the clear waters of Grand Traverse Bay, and explore the northern tip of the peninsula. Then we'll turn south for a completely different perspective, eventually reaching Peninsula Drive and the shores of West Grand Traverse Bay for a beautiful waterfront journey back toward Traverse City. Along the way, we'll point out places worth stopping, share some of the stories behind what you're seeing, and introduce you to a few things you might otherwise drive right past. There's no need to rush. This is your tour, so explore at your own pace. Stop for a view, visit a winery if you're not the one driving, grab some local fruit or ice cream, walk along the beach, and simply enjoy the scenery. Brick storefronts, elegant mansions, church steeples, and winding streets have remained remarkably unchanged for more than 150 years, making Galena one of America's best-preserved historic communities. I'm delighted you'll be joining me as we explore this extraordinary river town. Along the way, we'll visit the home of Ulysses S. Grant, stroll one of America's finest Main Streets, cross the scenic Galena River, discover grand churches, historic hotels, and impressive public buildings, and uncover the stories that transformed this small frontier settlement into one of the wealthiest communities in the Midwest. But before we begin, let's answer an interesting question. Why is this town called Galena? The name comes from galena, a naturally occurring mineral that is the primary ore of lead. In the early 1800s, rich deposits of galena were discovered throughout the surrounding hills, sparking a mining boom that attracted prospectors, entrepreneurs, and settlers from across the young United States. Without galena, there would likely be no Galena. The nearby Galena River played an equally important role. Steamboats carried lead ore, supplies, and passengers between Galena and the Mississippi River, making this one of the busiest inland river ports in America. During the 1840s, Galena ranked among the busiest and wealthiest cities in Illinois and, for a brief period, rivaled the young city of Chicago in economic importance. Prosperity brought impressive brick buildings, luxurious homes, grand hotels, churches, and civic landmarks, many of which still stand today. Ironically, the same economic decline that could have doomed Galena ended up preserving it. As river traffic faded and commerce shifted elsewhere, there was little pressure to replace the city's historic buildings with modern development. Today, nearly 85 percent of the buildings within the historic district date to before 1900, giving visitors one of the most authentic glimpses of 19th-century America anywhere in the country. You'll also notice that Galena looks very different from most Midwestern towns. Rather than being built across flat prairie, the city grew within a narrow river valley. Its winding streets climb the surrounding hillsides, creating beautiful viewpoints and a character unlike almost anywhere else in the region. Along our walk, you'll also follow in the footsteps of Ulysses S. Grant. Before becoming the commanding general of the Union Army and the 18th President of the United States, Grant was simply a local resident working in his family's leather goods store here in Galena. Few could have imagined that this quiet river town would become forever linked with one of America's most influential leaders. If you're driving, we recommend parking at Depot Park. It's conveniently located just a short walk from both the beginning and the end of the tour, making it the perfect place to leave your car before we set off to explore historic Galena. Our walk covers about two miles at a relaxed pace and should take around an hour and a half, depending on how often you stop to admire the architecture, browse the unique shops, or capture a few memorable photos.
