Das alte Wohltätigkeitszentrum
Rechts oben sehen wir das alte Charity Center, die Vieille Charité. Dieses historische Gebäude hat einen weiten Weg hinter sich – vom einfachen Armenhaus zum lebendigen Museums- und Kulturzentrum. Im 17. Jahrhundert ging Frankreich hart gegen Obdachlose vor. Skrupellose Wachen, die sogenannten „Bettlerjäger“, trieben sie zusammen. Wer nicht aus Marseille stammte, flog hochkant aus der Stadt, während einheimische Bettler weggesperrt wurden. Die Bevölkerung hatte jedoch großes Mitleid mit ihnen, was wegen des brutalen Vorgehens für ordentlich Zündstoff sorgte.

Damals dienten Armenhäuser als Arbeitshäuser. Die Menschen schufteten als Dienstboten, Schiffsjungen oder lernten bei Bäckern und Näherinnen. Mit der Zeit wurde es hier richtig eng: Die Zahl der Bewohner stieg von 850 im Jahr 1736 auf über tausend um 1760. Doch als sich die Einstellung der Gesellschaft zum Wegsperren der Armen änderte, sank die Zahl bis 1781 auf nur noch 250.

Nachdem das Gebäude das Chaos der Französischen Revolution überstanden hatte, wurde es im 19. Jahrhundert zur Obdachlosenunterkunft. Später, bis 1922, diente es der französischen Fremdenlegion als Kaserne und schließlich als Zuflucht für Menschen, die durch Stadtumbau und Krieg ihr Zuhause verloren hatten. Leider hinterließen Jahre der Vernachlässigung ihre Spuren: Hausbesetzer und Vandalen machten sich breit. 1962 war das Gebäude in einem erbärmlichen Zustand – 146 Familien und etwa 30 Nonnen hausten hier unter ziemlich furchtbaren Bedingungen.

Glücklicherweise wurden 1968 Gelder bereitgestellt, um das Gebäude zu retten. Ein riesiges, extrem aufwendiges Restaurierungsprojekt lief von 1970 bis 1986. Die Kapelle wurde 1981 fertiggestellt, was diesen historischen Komplex sprichwörtlich vor dem endgültigen Verfall rettete.

Heute ist es ein echtes Kultur- und Kunst-Highlight für Marseille – meilenweit entfernt von den Zeiten als Arbeitshaus. Der wunderschön restaurierte Komplex beherbergt heute fantastische Orte wie das Museum für Mittelmeerarchäologie und das Museum für afrikanische, ozeanische und indianische Kunst, wo ihr Exponate aus aller Welt entdecken könnt.

Aber es ist mehr als nur ein Museum: Als lebendiges Kulturzentrum bietet es Raum für Events, Ausstellungen und Performances, die Marseilles kreative Szene zeigen. Der Innenhof, der einst den Ärmsten der Stadt Schutz bot, ist heute ein wunderschöner Ort, um zu entspannen, sich umzusehen und die Geschichte und Architektur auf sich wirken zu lassen.
