He were go, take a look to your right. That's Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. We'll be exploring it shortly, but first let's enjoy one of the Texas Hill Country's most beautiful natural landmarks.

In just a moment, we'll cross the Pedernales River. Don't let its peaceful appearance fool you. This river has shaped both the landscape and the history of the region for thousands of years. Flowing for more than one hundred miles through the heart of the Hill Country before joining the Colorado River, the Pedernales has carved limestone bluffs, nourished ancient cypress trees, and provided a reliable source of water for Native Americans, early settlers, ranchers, and eventually the Johnson family.

The name "Pedernales" comes from the Spanish word for flint, a nod to the hard stones found along its banks. During periods of heavy rain, this gentle stream can transform into a powerful, fast-moving river, a reminder of the Hill Country's dramatic flash floods.

For President Lyndon B. Johnson, however, the Pedernales was much more than a river. He swam here as a boy, fished these waters, and returned throughout his life whenever he wanted to escape Washington. To him, this river represented home.

LBJ Ranch
Coming up is the legendary LBJ Ranch, one of the most important presidential homes in American history. Officially part of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, this was far more than a family ranch—it became known around the world as the "Texas White House."

Lyndon Baines Johnson was born just a few miles from here and spent much of his life in the Texas Hill Country. Even after becoming the 36th President of the United States, he returned here whenever he could. Between 1963 and 1969, this quiet ranch became a fully functioning White House. World leaders, members of Congress, military leaders, and journalists all traveled here to meet with the president, while Air Force One landed at the nearby ranch airstrip.

Johnson believed he could think more clearly away from Washington. Many important decisions affecting the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, Medicare, and the Great Society programs were discussed right here, surrounded by cattle pastures and live oak trees instead of marble buildings and political crowds.

The ranch itself covers more than 1,500 acres and remains much as it was during Johnson's lifetime. If you choose to stop, you'll find the Texas White House, the reconstructed birthplace of the president, family cemetery, ranch buildings, and the famous Hereford cattle that Johnson proudly raised. He even developed his own registered bloodline, known as the "Johnson Family Herefords."

As you continue through the ranch, it's easy to see why this place meant so much to LBJ. For him, this wasn't just a retreat from the presidency—it was home. Here, he could trade a business suit for cowboy boots, drive the ranch roads, and reconnect with the Texas landscape that shaped his character long before he entered the White House.
