Discovery Green Park
Alright folks, buckle up for a true Houston success story! On your left is Discovery Green, a 12-acre urban park that has completely transformed downtown. Not long ago, this very spot was nothing but parking lots and concrete. Then, in 2008, thanks to the vision of the Kinder Foundation and Houston First Corporation, it was reborn as the city’s vibrant “front yard.”

Discovery Green is all about energy and activity. There’s a lake where you can kayak or paddleboard, a stage that hosts free concerts and outdoor movies, playgrounds for kids, dog runs for four-legged friends, even a putting green. Seasonal public art keeps the park dynamic—think of striking installations like Leo Tanguma’s Mural of the Americas or Jean-Michel Othoniel’s colorful Synchronicity of Color.

But this park is more than just a pretty green space—it’s a catalyst. Its success sparked a wave of growth downtown, drawing new restaurants, residences, and cultural activity. Today, it hosts over 1,000 free events each year and stands as proof of what bold urban planning can achieve: turning asphalt into a living, breathing hub where Houstonians gather to play, relax, and celebrate.

George R. Brown Convention Center
Up ahead, prepare is the George R. Brown Convention Center, or simply the GRB, one of the true powerhouses of Houston’s convention and tourism industry.

Opened in 1987 and named after Houston businessman and philanthropist George R. Brown, the center debuted with a jaw-dropping 1.15 million square feet of space—enough room to fit seven NFL football fields inside. From day one, it placed Houston among the top destinations for large-scale conventions.

The GRB has only grown since. Expansions in 2003 and again in 2016 transformed it into the centerpiece of Avenida Houston, a pedestrian-friendly district linking the center with Discovery Green, Minute Maid Park, hotels, and great restaurants.

Its colorful glass façade is instantly recognizable, reflecting the Texas sky in bold, shifting hues. Inside, the GRB is a hive of activity, hosting everything from the massive Offshore Technology Conference to pop culture fan conventions. For many visitors, this is their very first taste of Houston hospitality.

The GRB isn’t just a convention center—it’s an economic engine, driving millions of dollars into the local economy, supporting thousands of jobs, and proving that in Houston, we do everything big.
