Welcome to Downtown Montreal
Welcome to Downtown Montreal! At the light, turn right on René-Lévesque Boulevard.

As you drive through these bustling streets, you'll quickly notice that Montreal feels different from most North American cities. The elegant stone buildings, sidewalk cafés, and frequent French signs often make visitors feel as though they've crossed the Atlantic into Europe.

Montreal is the largest French-speaking city in the Americas and one of the world's most bilingual metropolitan areas. While French is the official language of Quebec and the language you'll see on street signs and hear most often, English is also widely spoken, creating a unique blend of cultures that has shaped the city's identity for centuries.

The city itself sits on an island between the mighty Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. It was founded by French settlers in 1642 as Ville-Marie, a small missionary colony. Over the centuries, Montreal grew into one of North America's most important ports and commercial centers, welcoming immigrants from around the world who added their own traditions, cuisines, and neighborhoods to its rich cultural tapestry.

Today, more than four million people call the greater Montreal area home. It's a city celebrated for its world-class festivals, renowned restaurants, thriving arts scene, and passion for sports—especially hockey, which many locals consider more than just a game.

As we explore, you'll discover that every neighborhood has its own personality. From sleek skyscrapers and historic churches to lively markets, Olympic landmarks, and charming waterfront streets, Montreal is a city of remarkable contrasts. So settle in and enjoy the drive as we begin discovering one of North America's most captivating destinations.

Place Ville Marie - Iconic Cross-Shaped Tower
Coming up on your right is Place Ville Marie, one of Montreal's most recognizable landmarks and a symbol of the city's modern transformation.

Completed in 1962, this striking cruciform, or cross-shaped, skyscraper was the centerpiece of an ambitious redevelopment project that helped shift Montreal's commercial heart from Old Montreal to the downtown district you see today. At 47 stories tall, it was Canada's tallest building when it opened and quickly became an icon of progress and innovation.

Place Ville Marie is far more than an office tower. Beneath your feet lies a vast underground network known as the RESO, or Underground City. Stretching for more than 30 kilometers, this remarkable system connects shopping centers, office buildings, hotels, metro stations, restaurants, and entertainment venues. During Montreal's long winters, hundreds of thousands of people use it daily to move comfortably around the city without stepping outside.

If you look toward the top of the building, you may notice the large illuminated beacon that shines each night. It has become a familiar feature of Montreal's skyline and can be seen from miles away.

For one of the city's best panoramic views, visitors can head to the Place Ville Marie observation terrace, offering spectacular vistas of downtown, Mount Royal, the Saint Lawrence River, and, on a clear day, far beyond the city limits.

As we continue our journey, you'll see how this modern business district blends seamlessly with Montreal's historic roots, creating one of North America's most distinctive urban landscapes.
