North Saskatchewan River Valley
Welcome to the North Saskatchewan River Valley—Edmonton’s crown jewel and the largest stretch of urban parkland in Canada. Winding its way through the heart of the city, the river itself flows over 1,200 kilometers from the Rocky Mountains to Lake Winnipeg, carving out a lush, scenic corridor that defines Edmonton’s landscape.

This expansive greenbelt is more than just a park—it's a natural playground offering over 150 kilometers of maintained trails for walking, biking, and cross-country skiing. Whether you’re paddling down the river, picnicking under tall trees, or hiking along elevated trails with panoramic views, you’ll find the perfect balance of adventure and serenity here.

The valley is also home to major city attractions like the Muttart Conservatory, Fort Edmonton Park, and countless lookout points, bridges, and picnic spots. It’s where locals come to recharge and visitors come to be surprised by just how much nature lives right inside the city. In every season, the River Valley offers something new—wildflowers in spring, canoeing in summer, golden foliage in fall, and snowy magic in winter.

So roll down your windows, take in the fresh air, and let Edmonton’s River Valley show you why this city is known as “Canada’s Festival City with a forest in the middle.”

Alberta Legislature Building
That grand domed building on your left is the Alberta Legislature—one of Edmonton’s most iconic landmarks and the heart of provincial politics. Built in 1913 in the elegant Beaux-Arts style, the building is both a symbol of democracy and an architectural showpiece, with towering columns, ornate stonework, and a central dome that rises proudly above the city skyline.

Take a walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds, where fountains, gardens, and century-old trees create a peaceful contrast to the political action inside. Free guided tours are offered year-round, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at Alberta’s government, along with fascinating details about the art, design, and history of the building.

Fun fact: The Legislature was constructed using sandstone quarried from Glenbow, a town west of Calgary, and it's stood as a monument to Alberta’s growth ever since.

And that statue out front? It’s Alexander Cameron Rutherford, Alberta’s very first Premier. His legacy lives on not just here, but also at the nearby University of Alberta, which he helped found.

Whether you're here to admire the architecture or soak in the views of the River Valley just behind it, the Legislature Grounds are a must-see stop on your Edmonton journey.
