Tratado de Holston y río Tennessee
¡Bienvenidos a Knoxville! Mientras empezamos nuestro recorrido, tómense un momento para apreciar el ancho río que tienen a su lado. Hoy se le conoce como el Río Tennessee, pero por miles de años, estas vías fluviales sirvieron como rutas de transporte vitales y puntos de encuentro para los pueblos indígenas, incluyendo a los Cheroqui.

A poca distancia de aquí, se desarrolló un capítulo importante en la historia de Estados Unidos. En 1791, se firmó el Tratado de Holston entre representantes del recién formado gobierno de los Estados Unidos y líderes de la Nación Cheroqui. Negociado por el gobernador William Blount en nombre del presidente George Washington, el tratado buscaba establecer la paz, definir límites territoriales y regular las relaciones entre los colonos y el pueblo Cheroqui.

Aunque el acuerdo pretendía reducir el conflicto en la frontera, sus promesas no siempre se cumplieron. La continua expansión hacia el oeste ejerció una presión creciente sobre las tierras Cheroqui, convirtiendo el tratado en un hito importante, pero complicado, en la historia de la región.

Hill y Gay: Puentes con Historia
A su izquierda, alzándose sobre Neyland Drive, está el Puente de Hill Avenue. Terminado en 1936, esta elegante estructura de hormigón es uno de los mejores ejemplos de ingeniería de puentes de principios del siglo XX en Knoxville. Diseñado con un sistema de arcos patentado por Daniel Luten, ha unido la ciudad por generaciones.

Desde aquí, tómate un momento para mirar hacia atrás. El impresionante puente de acero verde sobre el Tennessee es el histórico Puente de Gay Street, el más antiguo de Knoxville. Inaugurado en 1898, sus arcos distintivos son ya un ícono, uniendo el centro con el sur por más de un siglo.
