Parliament Building – The Heart of Québec
Welcome to one of Québec City's most impressive landmarks — the Parliament Building of Quebec.

Standing before you is the political heart of the province of Québec, home to the National Assembly where laws are debated and decisions are made for more than eight million residents. But even if politics isn't your thing, this building is worth admiring simply for its architecture and stories.

Completed in 1886, the building was designed by architect Eugène-Étienne Taché, who wanted it to reflect Québec's French roots and identity. Take a look at the façade and you'll notice dozens of statues and historical figures watching over the city. Explorers, religious leaders, Indigenous figures, military heroes, and politicians all stand here as a kind of stone timeline of Québec's past.

Above the main entrance you'll see Québec's famous motto: "Je me souviens" — "I remember." Interestingly, people often debate exactly what Taché intended those words to mean. He never fully explained it. Some believe it refers to remembering Québec's French heritage, while others see it as remembering the province's entire complex history.

And here's a fun detail: unlike many government buildings around the world that feel hidden behind fences and barriers, this one was intentionally designed to be open and visible to the public, almost blending politics into the city itself.

Feel free to take a few moments for photos here — the gardens and fountain area in front of the building make a great spot. When you're ready, continue following the route and we'll uncover more of Québec City's stories ahead.

Tourny Fountain – A Gift with a Long Journey
Up ahead is the beautiful Tourny Fountain, one of Québec City's most elegant and photographed landmarks. With its bronze statues, flowing water, and dramatic details, it almost feels like something lifted straight out of Paris — and in a way, it was.

The fountain was originally created in France in the 1850s and stood in the city of Bordeaux at Place des Quinconces. More than a century later, it made quite a journey across the Atlantic before being gifted to Québec City in 2007 for the city's 400th anniversary celebrations.

Take a look at the details around the fountain. You'll spot children, fish, lions, and mythological figures all woven into the design. Like many fountains of that era, it wasn't built simply to spray water — it was intended to symbolize prosperity, movement, and the energy of a growing city.

It also sits in a perfect location between the Parliament Building and the historic walls of Old Québec, making it one of those places where locals and visitors naturally slow down, gather, and snap photos.

And if you're visiting at night, the fountain becomes even more impressive when illuminated, with the water and bronze taking on an entirely different character.

Feel free to pause for a photo before we continue on our journey through Québec City's history.
