Spokane Falls – Washington Street Bridge
As you drive across the Washington Street Bridge, look around — you’re right above the powerful heart of Spokane: the Spokane Falls. Beneath you, the river plunges through volcanic rock on its way through downtown, filling the air with the sound of rushing water and mist. It’s especially dramatic in spring, when snowmelt from the mountains swells the river into a roaring spectacle.

To your left, you’ll spot the Monroe Street Dam, one of the city’s early hydroelectric power sources. Spokane has been drawing energy from this river for more than a century, and it still helps light up the city today.

To your right, the land stretching out ahead of you forms a natural peninsula leading toward downtown — and just beyond it, separated by another channel of the river, is Canada Island, now officially renamed Snxw meneɂ, in honor of the Spokane Tribe. It’s part of Riverfront Park, which occupies several islands created by the branching river.

Keep driving south, and you’ll roll right into downtown Spokane, where the city’s history, art, and energy all flow from this same river that has shaped it for thousands of years.

Great Northern Clocktower
o your right is the Great Northern Clocktower, one of Spokane’s most recognizable landmarks.

It was built in 1902 as part of the old Great Northern Railway Depot, which once stood right here before Riverfront Park was created for Expo ’74. The depot is long gone, but the clocktower remains — its four clock faces still keeping perfect time and watching over the park as a proud reminder of Spokane’s railroad past.
