Ship Creek Salmon Viewing
Coming up on your left is Ship Creek, the very spot where Anchorage was founded in 1915 as a railroad construction camp. Today, it’s best known as one of the most unique urban salmon streams in the world.

Every summer, thousands of king and silver salmon swim upriver right through the heart of the city. From the viewing platforms along the banks, you can watch anglers casting for trophy fish, and if you’re lucky, spot a salmon leaping right out of the water. Interpretive signs explain the salmon life cycle, and you’ll often see bald eagles or even the occasional seal following the fish upstream.

It’s a reminder that in Anchorage, the wild isn’t somewhere far away — it flows right through the middle of town.

Alaska Railroad Depot – Gateway to the Last Frontier
On your right is the Alaska Railroad Depot, a working station that’s been the heartbeat of Anchorage since the city’s earliest days. Built in 1942, this depot is still the starting point for spectacular rail journeys through the wilderness of Alaska.

From here, the Denali Star heads north to Denali National Park and Fairbanks, while the Coastal Classic winds south to Seward, offering some of the most breathtaking train views in North America. In summer, crowds of travelers gather here with cameras and backpacks, ready to see glaciers, mountains, and wildlife roll past their windows.

The railroad itself was central to Anchorage’s founding — the city grew up around the Ship Creek construction camp in 1915, when workers first arrived to build the Alaska Railroad. Over a century later, the depot still connects Anchorage to the state’s wild interior, making it a true gateway to the Last Frontier.
