And now we are at beginning of our journey through Belgrade! The big sculpture in front of us is The monument of serbian medival ruler Stefan Nemanja. It is the work of Russian sculptor Aleksandar Julijanovic Rukavishnikov. Ill tell you something further about this ruler. Stefan Nemanja was the founder of the Serbian medieval Nemanjic dynasty and creator of Serbian empire. In that way, it represents the highest monument on the territory of Serbia. The monument was unveiled on Savindan, January 27, 2021. The monument represents the ruling figure of Stefan Nemanja in the aristocratic one livery. On the pedestal are reliefs from Nemanja's life and Serbian history during his reign. On the front side of the pedestal, just below the monumental figure, is the Studenica Cross, one of the recognizable symbols from Nemanja's endowment of the Studenica Monastery. On the outside of the pedestal, the Studenica Monastery and the Hilandar Monastery are shown, the two most important endowments of Stefan Nemanja. Other reliefs are made in the image of Serbian frescoes, and one of them is dynasty Nemanjić.
Behind monument is located building of former main railway station. It's intresting to know about this old station is that first train was left on August 1884, with all the court honors. At that time, the passengers were members of dynasty Obrenovic. Also, in that period and periods after, Serbia had one of the busiest train routes in Europe. The station building is large, it has about a hundred rooms. Above the entrance is the clock, one of the first public clocks in Belgrade. Due to the needs, the building of the former Main Railway Station should be turned into a museum or gallery. Due to needs of project "Belgrade waterfront", building of railway stations is reordered.

I came to the big city...with purpose.
Now we are located at the crossroad of Balkanska and Admirala Geprata street. We will continue the tour along Balkanska Street all the way to Terazije and the Moskva Hotel. Until that, i'm going to tel you a brief story about this legendar sreet. Balkanska Street used to have a special status. Reason for that is because most of the passengers many years ago had came to the capital by train, and then from the railway station, on foot to Terazije and the rest of the city.. This street is used to be known for the best četen-alva and ice cream, but also for arts and craft shops. Balkanska Street was one of the most famous and accessible craft centers for city ladies and gentlemen. Today, there are only a few handicraft shops from which hand-made hats remind of the former elegance and charm of this region.

Belgrade Waterfront
was a cooperative bank founded in 1882 to promote savings and support small enterprises, craftspeople and the poor of Belgrade. The majority of the building was constructed on the old embankment, and since the land was underwater due to the proximity of the river, the foundation of many walls has to be made of reinforced concrete, the first time in Belgrade, but using the iron for clamps, since there were was no round iron in Belgrade at the time. The social status of the Belgrade Cooperative dictated that the representativeness and monumentality become the only possible architectural concept. It was designed in the style of academism, with elements borrowed from both eclectic academic style, as well as contemporary Art Nouveau architecture.City's Institute for the protection of the cultural monuments drafted the reconstruction project for the building in 2009. As the building is withing the location of the Belgrade Waterfront project, the investors of this project renovated the venue in 2014. Reconstruction included refurbishment of the object as it is, without reconstruction of the missing parts.
