Hello there and welcome to UCPlaces! Today I’m going to be taking you on a Cherry Blossom exploration tour around Hains Point. Now, this tour is 4 miles long, so make sure you give yourself an ample amount of time.
So how did all of the cherry trees get to Washington, DC? Well, in 1910 a Japanese mayor sent 2,000 trees to the United States. Unfortunately they were diseased and filled with insects so US President William Taft had a huge bonfire with them. The Japanese felt badly about this and sent another 3,000 healthy trees which were planted all around DC.
The trees bloom for around 2 weeks, depending on the weather, typically around the beginning of April. Peak bloom lasts four to seven days. Let’s see how well we did with our timing this year!
