Crossing the Columbia into Wenatchee
We'll begin our road trip from East Wenatchee to Seattle by crossing the mighty Columbia River from East Wenatchee into Wenatchee. It's a fitting start to a journey through some of Washington's most spectacular landscapes.

The broad river below you is the Columbia, the largest river in the Pacific Northwest. Flowing for more than 1,200 miles from the Canadian Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, it has shaped the region's history, economy, and way of life for thousands of years. Today, its waters generate hydroelectric power, irrigate vast orchards and vineyards, and serve as a vital transportation corridor.

You're crossing the Senator George Sellar Bridge, which opened in 1950. It replaced the original 1908 Columbia River Bridge, the first highway bridge ever built across the Columbia. If you glance upstream, you may spot that historic steel truss bridge, now preserved as part of the Apple Capital Loop Trail for pedestrians and cyclists.

As you reach the west bank, welcome to Wenatchee, proudly known as the Apple Capital of the World. Blessed with fertile volcanic soils, abundant sunshine, and irrigation from the Columbia River, this valley has become one of North America's premier fruit-growing regions. While apples are the city's signature crop, the surrounding orchards also produce world-class cherries, pears, peaches, apricots, and more.

Enjoy the views as we enter Wenatchee. There's plenty more to discover before we begin climbing into the Cascade Mountains on our journey west.

Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center
Coming up on your right is the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center, one of the best places to discover the story of this unique region.

Housed in two historic downtown buildings, the museum takes visitors on a journey through thousands of years of local history. Exhibits explore the first Indigenous inhabitants, the Ice Age, the arrival of early settlers, the railroad, and the agricultural boom that transformed the Wenatchee Valley into one of the world's leading apple-growing regions.

Among its highlights are a detailed Great Northern Railway model, exhibits celebrating Washington's apple industry, and artifacts from the historic 1931 nonstop trans-Pacific flight that ended right here in Wenatchee.

If you're spending some time in town, this museum is an excellent stop to better understand how the Columbia River, the surrounding mountains, and generations of pioneers helped shape the Wenatchee Valley into the community you see today.

Taking a UCPlaces tour is fun and easy.
