Das hier ist nicht nur ein Markt, sondern ein echtes Stück amerikanischer Geschichte. Der Central Market ist der älteste durchgehend geöffnete Bauernmarkt der USA. Schon seit 1730 kaufen die Leute hier ein, als Lancasters Gründer James Hamilton diesen Platz als Treffpunkt reservierte. 1757 ernannte König Georg II. ihn offiziell zum öffentlichen Markt und besiegelte so seine Rolle für die Stadt.

Das beeindruckende neoromanische Gebäude vor euch, gekrönt von seinem Uhrturm, wurde 1889 eröffnet und vom lokalen Architekten Edwin F. Durang entworfen. Drinnen erzählt Stand für Stand die Geschichte von Lancaster. Amish-Farmer verkaufen erntefrisches Gemüse von Feldern ganz in der Nähe, Traditionsbetriebe bieten Fleisch und Käse an, und internationale Aromen spiegeln Generationen von Einwanderern wider – von deutschen und nahöstlichen Gerichten bis hin zu lateinamerikanischen und asiatischen Spezialitäten.

Das Fulton-Theater von Lancaster

Eröffnet im Jahr 1852 als Fulton Hall, wurde es zu Ehren von Robert Fulton benannt, dem Erfinder des Dampfschiffs, der hier in Lancaster County geboren wurde. Entworfen vom berühmten Architekten Samuel Sloan aus Philadelphia, ist die viktorianische Pracht des Gebäudes mit seiner verzierten Fassade und dem prunkvollen Interieur ein echter Augenschmaus. In fast zwei Jahrhunderten lief hier alles: von Varieté-Shows und Stummfilmen bis hin zu den heutigen, von der Kritik gefeierten Broadway-Produktionen. Legenden wie Mark Twain und Helen Hayes standen hier auf der Bühne. Während des Bürgerkriegs diente das Theater sogar als Lazarett für verwundete Soldaten – ein bewegendes Zeugnis seiner tiefen Verwurzelung in der Stadtgeschichte.

Heute führt das Fulton dieses Erbe fort und zeigt erstklassige Musicals, Theaterstücke und Familienshows, ohne dabei seinen historischen Charme zu verlieren.
