Hier ist die Alexander-Newski-Kathedrale.
Willkommen an der Alexander-Newski-Kathedrale, dem unverkennbaren Wahrzeichen von Sofia und einer der größten orthodoxen Kirchen der Welt. Mit ihren schimmernden Goldkuppeln, die über die Skyline der Stadt ragen, kann man sich kaum einen besseren Ort vorstellen, um unsere Reise durch Bulgariens Hauptstadt zu beginnen.

Obwohl sie jahrhundertealt aussieht, wurde die Kathedrale erst 1912 fertiggestellt. Sie wurde erbaut, um die rund 200.000 russischen Soldaten zu ehren, die im Russisch-Osmanischen Krieg von 1877 bis 1878 ihr Leben ließen – ein Konflikt, der schließlich zur Befreiung Bulgariens nach fast fünf Jahrhunderten osmanischer Herrschaft führte. Deshalb trägt die Kathedrale auch den Namen des heiligen Alexander Newski, eines verehrten russischen Fürsten und Feldherrn aus dem 13. Jahrhundert.

Nehmt euch einen Moment Zeit, um die beeindruckende Architektur zu bewundern. Die Kathedrale wurde im neobyzantinischen Stil entworfen, inspiriert von den großen Kirchen des Oströmischen Reiches. Ihre emporragende Hauptkuppel ist fast 46 Meter hoch, während die glänzenden, vergoldeten Kuppeln zu Sofias absolutem Markenzeichen geworden sind. Drinnen – falls sie bei eurem Besuch geöffnet ist – erwarten euch prächtige Fresken, bunter Marmor aus ganz Europa, kunstvolle Mosaike und eine Atmosphäre stiller Ehrfurcht, die einen wunderbaren Kontrast zur trubeligen Stadt da draußen bildet.

Aber dieser Platz ist mehr als nur die Heimat einer berühmten Kathedrale. Er bildet das historische Herz des modernen Sofia. In den nächsten ein, zwei Stunden werden wir entdecken, wie diese Stadt von den alten Römern, mittelalterlichen bulgarischen Königen, Jahrhunderten osmanischer Herrschaft und den dramatischen politischen Umbrüchen des 20. Jahrhunderts geprägt wurde. Sophienkirche und Denkmal des unbekannten Soldaten
Zu eurer Rechten steht die markante rote Backsteinkirche der Heiligen Sofia, eines der ältesten und wichtigsten Wahrzeichen Bulgariens. Während die prächtige Alexander-Newski-Kathedrale oft die Show stiehlt, ist diese bescheidene Kirche eigentlich der Grund, warum die Stadt überhaupt Sofia heißt.

Erbaut im 6. Jahrhundert unter der Herrschaft des byzantinischen Kaisers Justinian I., blickt die Sophienkirche auf fast 1.500 Jahre Geschichte zurück. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte hat sie Invasionen, Erdbeben und wechselnde Reiche überstanden. Während der osmanischen Herrschaft wurde sie in eine Moschee umgewandelt und diente sogar als Lagerhaus, bevor sie schließlich wieder als christliche Kirche restauriert wurde.

Die Kirche steht auf einem noch älteren Gelände. Unter ihren Fundamenten liegen die Überreste früherer Kirchen und einer riesigen römischen Nekropole – ein Beweis dafür, dass dieser Ort schon seit der Antike ein Ort der Andacht und des Gedenkens ist.

Vor dem 14. Jahrhundert war die Stadt als Serdica bekannt, benannt nach dem keltischen Stamm der Serden, die sich hier niederließen. Als die Sophienkirche zum bekanntesten Wahrzeichen der Stadt wurde, bürgerte es sich allmählich ein, die Stadt nach ihr zu benennen. Der Name „Sofia“ kommt übrigens vom griechischen Wort für „Weisheit“, bezieht sich aber auf die Heilige Weisheit und nicht auf eine Heilige namens Sofia.

Direkt vor der Kirche befindet sich das Denkmal für den Unbekannten Soldaten, eine der wichtigsten nationalen Gedenkstätten Bulgariens. Es ehrt die unzähligen bulgarischen Soldaten, die ihr Leben bei der Verteidigung ihres Landes ließen, deren Namen aber nie bekannt wurden. Eine ewige Flamme brennt hier als Symbol des Gedenkens, während der bronzene Löwe daneben – ein stolzes bulgarisches Nationalsymbol – stumm über die Gedenkstätte wacht.

Nehmt euch einen Moment Zeit, um zu sehen, wie wunderbar sich diese beiden Wahrzeichen ergänzen. Hinter euch steht die prächtige Kathedrale, die Bulgariens Befreiung feiert, und direkt neben euch die uralte Kirche, die der Stadt ihren Namen gab.
