כשאתם מביטים בשדות השלווים האלה של פנסילבניה, אולי קשה לדמיין שבבוקר ה-1 ביולי, 1863, אלפי חיילים התנקזו לכאן, במה שיהפוך לקרב הגדול ביותר שנערך אי פעם בצפון אמריקה.

ממש אחרי הזריחה, חיל הפרשים של האיחוד בפיקודו של גנרל ג'ון ביופורד זיהה כוחות קונפדרציה מתקרבים ממערב, לאורך ציר צ'יימברסבורג. ביופורד הבין מיד את החשיבות של השטח הגבוה שמדרום לגטיסברג. אם כוחות הקונפדרציה היו תופסים את הרכסים האלה קודם, צבא האיחוד היה נאלץ לנהל קרב קשה ועקוב מדם כדי להחזיר אותם לידיו.

המשימה של ביופורד הייתה פשוטה, אבל מסוכנת להחריד: לבלום את האויב מספיק זמן כדי שתגבורת חיל הרגלים של האיחוד תספיק להגיע.

אנדרטת אור התמיד לשלום: מסכסוך לפיוס
ממש מולכם ניצבת אנדרטת השלום של אור התמיד, אחד האתרים הכי מרגשים ומשמעותיים כאן בגטיסברג.

האנדרטה הזו, שנחנכה ב-3 ביולי 1938, מציינת את יובל ה-75 לקרב גטיסברג ומקדשת את רוח הפיוס בין הצפון לדרום. יותר מ-1,800 ותיקי מלחמת האזרחים חזרו לגטיסברג לטקס החניכה, כולל כמה מאות שלחמו ממש כאן, בשדות האלה. אויבים לשעבר, שפעם המלחמה הפרידה ביניהם, התאספו כאן יחד בשלום.

בראש האנדרטה בוערת אש תמיד, שמסמלת אחדות ואת התקווה שהאומה הזו לעולם לא תדע עוד סכסוך הרסני שכזה. על האנדרטה חרוטות המילים:

מנקודת התצפית הזו, אתם יכולים גם להבין את קנה המידה של שדה הקרב. הלחימה החלה במערב, ברכס מקפרסון, שם חיל הפרשים של האיחוד עיכב את התקדמות כוחות הקונפדרציה. ככל שהיום התקדם, הקרב התרחב צפונה ומזרחה, וסחף בסופו של דבר עשרות אלפי חיילים למאבק על השליטה בגבעות שמסביב לגטיסברג.
