Market Square: The Heart of Historic Alexandria
Welcome to Alexandria's historic heart. You're standing in Market Square, one of the oldest continuously operating marketplaces in the United States. Take a moment to look around before continuing your walk.

POI Narration:
Founded in 1749, Market Square has been the social and civic center of Alexandria for nearly three centuries. In the colonial era, local farmers arrived here by horse and wagon to sell fresh produce, meat, and other goods. Today, the tradition lives on through the city's beloved Saturday farmers market, believed to be one of the oldest continuously operating farmers markets in the nation.

Dominating the square is Alexandria City Hall, completed in 1871. Its distinctive clock tower has become one of Old Town's most recognizable landmarks. While the building serves as the seat of local government, the square itself remains a gathering place for residents and visitors alike, hosting concerts, festivals, and community celebrations throughout the year.

Market Square also offers a direct connection to America's founding story. In the 1750s and 1760s, a young surveyor and military officer named George Washington frequently visited Alexandria, conducting business and socializing just steps from where you stand today. He later attended services nearby at Christ Church and maintained close ties with the city throughout his life.

As you continue your journey through Old Town Alexandria, you'll discover that history here isn't confined to museums—it's woven into the streets, buildings, and public spaces that remain very much alive today.

Gadsby's Tavern Museum - George Washington's Favorite Tavern
You have arrived at one of Alexandria's most celebrated historic landmarks. On your left stands Gadsby's Tavern Museum. Feel free to pause here and admire the beautifully preserved Georgian architecture before continuing.

Although commonly known as Gadsby's Tavern, this historic complex actually consists of two buildings dating back to the late 18th century. The tavern quickly became one of the most important social hubs in Alexandria, welcoming travelers, merchants, politicians, and military officers passing through the bustling port town.

The tavern takes its name from John Gadsby, an Englishman who managed the establishment from 1796 to 1808. Under his leadership, the tavern flourished, hosting elegant banquets, theatrical performances, dancing assemblies, and important civic gatherings.

Perhaps its most famous guest was George Washington, who attended numerous events here, including celebrations marking his birthday. Other notable visitors included early American leaders such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette. In an era before hotels and dedicated event venues, taverns like this served as the center of community life, where ideas were exchanged, friendships formed, and the young nation's future was often discussed over meals and drinks.

Today, the museum offers visitors a glimpse into daily life in early America. Period furnishings, recreated dining spaces, and knowledgeable interpreters help bring the late 1700s and early 1800s vividly to life. If you have extra time, it's well worth stepping inside to experience what hospitality looked like during the nation's earliest years.

As you continue exploring Alexandria, you'll notice how remarkably preserved Old Town remains. Buildings like Gadsby's Tavern allow us to walk the very same streets once traveled by the people who helped shape American history.

When you're ready, continue just a short distance east toward Carlyle House Historic Park, the elegant Georgian mansion of one of colonial Virginia's wealthiest merchants.
