Kickoff: Hoots Hollow & The Christina River Start Point
Welcome to the start of our tour! Right now, we’re at Hoots Hollow, a peaceful natural wetlands area along the Christina River, connected to the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge — one of the largest urban freshwater marshes on the East Coast.

Just over the marsh, you’ll see the DuPont Environmental Education Center, where visitors can take in sweeping marsh views, enjoy nature exhibits, and walk boardwalk trails right over the wetlands.

This spot is also the northern end of the Jack A. Markell Trail — known as the “JAM Trail” — a 5.5-mile shared-use path that runs between Wilmington’s Riverfront and New Castle, following a former rail corridor through marsh and along the river. It’s a favorite among cyclists, runners, and bird-watchers who want a quick escape from the city into nature.

Ahead, spanning the Christina River, is a scenic pedestrian bridge that connects the trail to the nature center — a great photo opportunity and a perfect spot to take in the unique mix of wetlands, waterways, and urban skyline.

And if you look a bit farther, you’ll notice a train bridge — a reminder that this very corridor has long been used to move people and goods between Wilmington’s riverfront industries and the rest of the region. The city grew around transportation like this: river, rail, and now recreation.

So take a moment — breathe in the fresh air, listen for wildlife calls, and enjoy the calm before we roll into the excitement and history of Wilmington. From nature to culture, from wetlands to waterfront — this is the perfect launch point for our journey.

Whenever you're ready… let’s get moving to our next stop!

Daniel S. Frawley Stadium
On your left is Daniel S. Frawley Stadium, home of Wilmington’s beloved Minor League Baseball team — the Blue Rocks. This stadium opened in 1993 and can welcome more than 6,000 fans on game days.

This whole riverfront area looked very different not too long ago. The stadium was built on part of the former Dravo Shipyard, once a major industrial employer along the Christina River — so it represents a big moment in Wilmington’s transformation from heavy industry to entertainment and community spaces.

The Blue Rocks are known for fun, family-friendly baseball — and for some quirky mascots over the years. If you’re lucky enough to be here during baseball season, this is a great place to grab a local game and experience Wilmington like a true resident.

Even as we just drive by today, take in the view: a modern ballpark helping anchor the revival of the Wilmington Riverfront — turning what once was a gritty work zone into a lively and welcoming destination for locals and travelers alike.
