Sonoma Plaza
Welcome to Sonoma Plaza, the historic heart of the city and one of the most iconic town squares in California. As we arrive, take a moment to notice just how large it is—eight full acres, making it the biggest traditional plaza in the entire state. Laid out in the 1830s during the Mexican era, this square was part of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’s plan to develop Sonoma as a thriving northern frontier town. The plaza became the stage for some of California’s most dramatic early moments, including the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt, which ultimately helped pave the way for statehood.

Today, Sonoma Plaza blends history with easygoing Wine Country charm. Shaded pathways, lawns, and a duck pond create a peaceful backdrop, while the surrounding streets are lined with tasting rooms, cafés, boutiques, and landmarks like the Toscano Hotel and the Sonoma Barracks. Whether you’re here to explore history or simply enjoy a stroll beneath the old valley oaks, the plaza is the perfect opening chapter for your Sonoma adventure.

Mission San Francisco
Ahead on the right is Mission San Francisco Solano, the northernmost and final mission established in California’s historic mission chain. Founded in 1823, it marked Spain’s last attempt to solidify its presence in the region. Unlike the earlier coastal missions, this one rose on the frontier edge of Alta California, surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and the tribal lands of local Native peoples. Its simple adobe chapel, long barracks, and quiet courtyard looked far different from the grander missions to the south, but its purpose was the same: faith, agriculture, and settlement.

After Mexico won independence from Spain, the mission became part of a rapidly changing landscape. It later played a role in Sonoma’s military and political history, especially during the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846.

Today, Mission San Francisco Solano is a peaceful historic site where you can step inside restored rooms, explore museum exhibits, and reflect on the region’s layered past.
