Hallöchen! Ich bin Emma, euer Guide auf unserer Tour zu den coolsten Orten und Storys rund um Kuala Lumpurs Erbe und Kultur.

Los geht's auf diesem riesigen, historischen Platz.
Willkommen am Merdeka Square, auch bekannt als Unabhängigkeitsplatz!

'Merdeka' bedeutet auf Malaiisch 'Unabhängigkeit' oder 'Freiheit'.

Hier wurde am 31. August 1957 Malaysias Unabhängigkeit ausgerufen, das Ende der britischen Herrschaft.

Stellt euch die Party vor, direkt vor uns auf der Wiese, an diesem Wahnsinnstag!
Die Gebäude drumrum, wie das Sultan Abdul Samad Building, machen den Platz noch geschichtsträchtiger. Da kommen wir gleich hin.

Lasst die Atmosphäre auf euch wirken und denkt an Malaysias Weg zur Unabhängigkeit. Ein super Start für eure Erkundungstour durch Kuala Lumpurs Geschichte.

Fun Fact: Seht ihr den weißen Fahnenmast in der Mitte? Einer der höchsten der Welt! Da laufen wir gleich vorbei. Ratet mal, wie hoch er ist!

Okay, bevor's weitergeht zur nächsten Station, drehen wir uns mal um.
Das elegante weiße Gebäude mit dem Turm ist die St. Mary’s Cathedral, eine der ältesten anglikanischen Kirchen Malaysias und ein ruhiger, aber wichtiger Teil der Kolonialgeschichte Kuala Lumpurs.

Gebaut wurde sie 1894, als KL noch ein junger britischer Verwaltungsposten war.
Die Kathedrale, die ihr seht, wurde 1895 fertiggestellt, entworfen vom Architekten A.C. Norman im Early English Gothic Stil – schlicht, elegant und ganz anders als die tropische Umgebung.

Die Kirche war ein spirituelles Zentrum für britische Beamte, Siedler und ihre Familien.

St. Mary’s ist historisch bedeutsam – ein Symbol der britischen Präsenz und der verschiedenen Glaubensrichtungen, die in dieser multikulturellen Stadt seit über einem Jahrhundert nebeneinander existieren.

So, jetzt drehen wir uns wieder um und schauen auf den Merdeka Square, das Feld, wo Malaysias Unabhängigkeit erklärt wurde.

Royal Selangor Club: "Königlicher Selangor Club: Echt nobel hier!"
Rechts von euch seht ihr das schnuckelige schwarz-weiße Gebäude, den Royal Selangor Club, eine der feinsten Kolonial-Adressen von Kuala Lumpur.

Gegründet 1884, war der Club mal das soziale Zentrum der britischen Kolonialgesellschaft – ein Treffpunkt für Beamte, Planer und Geschäftsleute zum Essen, Sport treiben und über Gott und die Welt quatschen.

Die Tudor-Fassade mit ihren Holzbalken und steilen Giebeln zeigt, wie die Briten versucht haben, ein Stück "Zuhause" in die Tropen zu holen. Der Club ist zwar noch aktiv, aber hauptsächlich für Mitglieder – aber von hier aus habt ihr 'nen super Blick auf die schicke Fassade und den gepflegten Rasen.

Krass, oder? Auf dem Cricketfeld vor dem Club – jetzt Teil des Merdeka Square – fanden früher Spiele zwischen Kolonialteams statt, und später war's der Ort der historischen Unabhängigkeitserklärung Malaysias 1957.

Okay, lasst uns mal loslegen und den Platz umrunden. Geht links den Weg entlang, dann biegt rechts ab, kurz bevor ihr die Straße erreicht, und weiter geht's zum nächsten Stopp.
