Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ’s Nativity
We are immediately greeted with one of the most important religious landmarks in all of Moldova, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ’s Nativity. Built between the years of 1830 and 1836, by architect Avraam Melnikov, a well known Russian architect, constructed in his most famous style of Neoclassical design. With a symmetrical layout and a grand dome, a tall bell tower, and the interior filled with beautiful frescoes and religious icons.

Originally built as the main Orthodox cathedral of Chisinau during Russian rule. It was damaged during World War II and later demolished by the Soviet authorities. In 1962, under Soviet rule, the authorities demolished the bell tower and converted the cathedral into an exhibition hall, as part of the USSR’s anti-religious policies. Religious practices were banned, and its religious icons and decorations were either destroyed or relocated. The Nativity Cathedral has witnessed wars, destruction, and rebirth, making it a symbol of Moldova’s resilience and faith. The current version was restored in the 1990s after Moldova gained independence, and in 1997, the bell tower was rebuilt, restoring the cathedral’s historical silhouette. It now serves as the main Orthodox cathedral in Chisinau and hosts important religious ceremonies, and it is a key spiritual center for Orthodox Christians in Moldova.

A longstanding urban legend suggests that a hidden treasure lies buried beneath the cathedral. Some believe it was placed there by church officials before the Soviet authorities seized the building. Others claim it dates back to the Ottoman or Russian periods, but no treasure has ever been officially discovered. Perhaps the treasure is looking for you!
