Église des Agion Anargyron
Notre premier arrêt de la journée, sur notre droite, est l'église des Agion Anargyron. Dédiée aux Saints Côme et Damien, également connus sous le nom des "Saints Anargyres". Ces saints étaient réputés pour leurs capacités de guérison et leur nature charitable, offrant des soins médicaux sans demander de paiement, d'où leur nom "Anargyroi", signifiant "sans argent" ou "sans paiement".

Cette petite mais paisible église occupe une place spéciale dans la vie religieuse de Paphos. Située près du cœur de la ville, elle offre un lieu de retraite tranquille où les habitants et les visiteurs viennent prier et chercher du réconfort spirituel. L'intérieur est orné d'icônes orthodoxes traditionnelles, créant une atmosphère de recueillement typique des églises chypriotes. La simplicité de son design renforce sa présence spirituelle, avec une ambiance apaisante invitant à la réflexion silencieuse.

Bien qu'elle ne soit pas aussi grande ou ornée que d'autres églises de la région, l'église des Agion Anargyron est significative pour son lien avec la guérison et la compassion. De nombreuses personnes visitent l'église, en particulier le jour de la fête des Saints Côme et Damien, célébrée le 1er novembre.

Histoire de Chypre
Alors que nous commençons notre visite à pied de Paphos, Chypre, il est important d'aborder l'histoire de cette ville incroyable. C'est un lieu imprégné de milliers d'années de riche histoire, de mythes et de culture, remontant à la période néolithique. Dans l'Antiquité, il y avait deux principales villes de Paphos : l'Ancienne Paphos (Kouklia), un centre dédié au culte d'Aphrodite, et la Nouvelle Paphos, fondée vers 320 av. J.-C. Cette dernière, située près de la ville moderne, est devenue la capitale administrative de Chypre sous la dynastie ptolémaïque puis l'Empire romain. À l'époque romaine, Paphos a prospéré et est devenue un centre culturel et politique de premier plan. De nombreuses villas romaines y ont été construites, ornées de mosaïques exquises qui survivent encore aujourd'hui, et que nous verrons plus tard lors de notre visite !

L'un des moments clés de l'histoire de la ville est survenu en 45 de notre ère, lorsque les apôtres Paul et Barnabé ont visité Paphos lors de leur voyage missionnaire. Cet événement est important dans l'histoire chrétienne car le gouverneur romain Sergius Paulus s'est converti au christianisme, faisant de Paphos l'un des premiers endroits au monde où un haut fonctionnaire romain a embrassé cette nouvelle foi.

À des époques plus modernes, Paphos est restée une petite ville jusqu'à ce que Chypre obtienne son indépendance en 1960. Depuis lors, elle est devenue l'une des destinations touristiques les plus populaires de l'île. C'est non seulement une ville de merveilles anciennes, mais aussi un lieu animé que nous aurons l'occasion de découvrir aujourd'hui.
