כנסיית אגיון אנארגירון
העצירה הראשונה שלנו היום, מצד ימין, היא כנסיית אגיון אנארגירון. הכנסייה מוקדשת לקדושים קוסמאס ודמיאנוס, הידועים גם כ"אנארגירוי הקדושים" – מרפאים ללא תשלום. הקדושים האלה נודעו ביכולות הריפוי שלהם ובאופיים הנדיב, כשהם הציעו טיפול רפואי ללא דרישת תשלום, ומכאן השם "אנארגירוי" שמשמעותו "ללא כסף" או "ללא תשלום".

הכנסייה הקטנה והשקטה הזו תופסת מקום מיוחד בחיים הדתיים של פאפוס. ממוקמת קרוב למרכז העיר, היא משמשת כמקום מפלט שליו שבו תושבים ומבקרים כאחד מגיעים להתפלל ולחפש נחמה רוחנית. הפנים מעוטר באיקונות אורתודוקסיות מסורתיות, שיוצרות אווירה של יראת כבוד, האופיינית לכנסיות קפריסאיות. הפשטות של העיצוב רק מעצימה את הנוכחות הרוחנית, והאווירה המרגיעה מזמינה לחשיבה שקטה.

קצת היסטוריה
פאפוס היא מקום שמלא באלפי שנים של היסטוריה עשירה, מיתולוגיה ותרבות, מהתקופה הנאוליתית ועד ימינו. בעת העתיקה היו שתי ערים עיקריות בפאפוס: פאפוס העתיקה (קוקליה), שהייתה מרכז לפולחן אפרודיטה, ופאפוס החדשה, שנוסדה בסביבות שנת 320 לפנה"ס. פאפוס החדשה, שנמצאת ליד העיר המודרנית, הפכה לבירה המנהלית של קפריסין תחת השושלת התלמית ולאחר מכן תחת האימפריה הרומית. בתקופת הרומאים, פאפוס שגשגה והפכה למרכז תרבותי ופוליטי חשוב. נבנו כאן הרבה וילות רומיות, מקושטות בפסיפסים מרהיבים ששרדו עד היום, ונראה אותם בהמשך הסיור!

אחד הרגעים המשמעותיים ביותר בתולדות העיר היה בשנת 45 לספירה, כשפאולוס וברנבאס, השליחים, ביקרו בפאפוס במהלך מסע המיסיונרי שלהם. האירוע הזה חשוב בהיסטוריה הנוצרית מכיוון שהמושל הרומי, סרגיוס פאולוס, התגייר לנצרות, מה שהפך את פאפוס לאחד המקומות הראשונים בעולם שבהם פקיד רומי בכיר אימץ את האמונה החדשה.

בתקופות מודרניות יותר, פאפוס נשארה עיירה קטנה עד שקפריסין קיבלה את עצמאותה ב-1960. מאז היא התפתחה לאחד היעדים התיירותיים הפופולריים ביותר באי. פאפוס היא לא רק עיר של פלאות עתיקות, אלא גם מקום חי ותוסס, אותו נחווה במהלך הסיור שלנו היום.
