Freedom Tower
Our first stop on our walking tour through Lower Manhattan is located right next to us, the Freedom Tower, otherwise known as the One World Trade Center. An iconic skyscraper with a dark past many of us remember all too well. Built upon the site of the former World Trade Center complex, which was devastatingly destroyed during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. A horrible event, but one that will forever leave its mark on the city of New York in particular.
Dedicated workers took an entire year to remove debris, but also to sadly recover the many bodies that were left at the ruins of the complex. There were many discussions on how to move forward, and what should happen with the once populated and active area in the city. It was decided that an international design competition be held to find the best possible outcome for the new generation of the World Trade Center complex.
The Freedom Tower’s design was revealed just one year later in 2003, with construction beginning in April 2006. Designed by Daniel Libeskind, his plan combined a glass tower with open memorial gardens to stand as memory of the two fallen towers. He also fought for the new building to be the tallest in the world, but due to many reasons, this was unable to be pushed forward. Once fully developed by the architecture firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 2013, the Freedom Tower ended up being 1,776 feet (540 meters), an homage to the year in which the Declaration of Independence was approved by the United States Congress. With 104 floors, and an observation deck with panoramic views of New York City, it offers a unique perspective from the tallest point in the city.
The Freedom Tower serves a symbol of resilience and renewal, standing as a testament to the city’s recovery and the enduring spirit of the United States. Although it has been built in the same complex, it will never fill the void left by the destruction of the Twin Towers, and the loss of so many innocent lives. But, as we stare up at its magnificent structure we are reminded of our strength and our growth. A difficult part of American history, but important nonetheless.
We are going to just walk across the way now to the 9/11 Memorial.

9/11 Memorial
We’ll get the chance to walk through most of the memorial, so you can grasp the area’s entire concept and overall feeling. We are immediately met with the North Tower Pool, situated in the footprint of the original North Tower. The South Tower Pool is just a bit below us, where we will make our way towards, in just a little. Both pools are the largest man-made waterfalls in all of North America, and the water flows down from the edges into a central void, creating a continuous and somber flow that symbolizes loss and absence. The voids are intended to evoke the emptiness left by the destruction of the Twin Towers.
The names of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 attacks are inscribed on bronze parapets surrounding the pools and are grouped based on personal connections, affiliations, and circumstances at the time of the attacks. For example, names of co-workers, first responders from the same unit, or passengers on the same flight are placed together.
