Taormina
So glad you could meet me here in beautiful Taormina, Sicily! I thought this pull off to capture the gorgeous view of the sea and the town of Taormina was the perfect spot to connect and begin our drive today.

Taormina’s charming atmosphere has been spreading joy for many years. With a history dating back to the 4th century BC, it was originally founded as a Greek colony. Since then it has gone through many transformations due to the different cultures that have stepped in. The town has seen Roman rule, Byzantine, and Norman rule that has ultimately influenced its architecture, art, religion, and culture.

Taormina is now a popular destination for tourists and locals alike with its rich history, stunning views, and the many events and festivals that celebrate the town’s heritage.

We will now make our way up the winding roads of this amazing coastal town, and I promise there will be countless places to pull off and take in the panoramic views of Taormina!

Turn in here!

Pretty fantastic sight right? Taormina is a very historic part of Sicily, but Sicily in itself is home to many myths and legends of Greek mythology. If you turn to face inland, and it’s a very clear day, you may be able to catch a glimpse of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in all of Europe. Mount Etna is involved in multiple stories of Greek mythology, but the most prominent being that Hephaestus, the god of metalworking, blacksmithing, and weapon making, had his workshop beneath Mount Etna. When Hephaestus was working on his new weapons or materials for the gods on Mount Olympus, the volcano would erupt with fire, smoke, and lava. Just in May of 2022, there was even a small eruption at Mount Etna! I wonder what Hephaestus was working on?

A smaller Greek mythology story that is more associated with the small town Taormina is that of the Cattle of the Sun. The tale goes that the cattle of the gods grazed on the sides of Mount Etna. But when one of these cows were killed and eaten it would bring ruin to the men who did such a thing. The reason Taormina is linked to this story is because there’s  speculation the name derives from a certain bull that grazes around the town. Where this could be I’m not sure, but hey! That’s how the story goes.

We are now going to get back into the car and head to our next destination, a famous medieval palace in the heart of Taormina!
