Beverly Hills Sign
One of the most iconic identifiers of being in Beverly Hills is the Beverly Hills Arch unveiled in 1912. The lily pond was built in the early 1900’s, then removed in the 1970’s. They brought it back in 2014 to honor the early lily pond. But between me and you- the locals think and say they also put the pond back because it created a barrier for people between them and the sign. between the 1970’s and 2000’s there were too many cases of tourists climbing all the way to the top of the sign to snap a photo only to fall from the top and actually end up with a broken bone or serious injury. It got so out of control the city was like- ok, we gotta do something about this… And thus we have the old lily pond restored!

Beverly Hills Garden Park
This is also is the start of the Beverly Gardens. We will now cross the street headed west, walking you through the perfectly manicured gardens. This garden was dedicated in 1911, making a 1.9 m (or 3.1 km) radius around the city. Along with gorgeous big trees, you will notice some unique art sculptures. Typically, the garden is sprinkled with large, unique pieces of art. However, at the time of the recording, many of the famous art pieces were removed or boarded up during Black Lives Matter protest and election season. Beverly Hills was a big area for the protests and the city removed some of the most expensive pieces to avoid damage. This is why you may see some display areas with no art in the middle. However the garden is still open to all for a stroll or picnic. Twice a year they do The Beverly Hills Art Show, and you may catch it while you are visiting!

You may notice there are winding streets with many fancy houses going up on either side going up the roads behind the gardens. Locals call it the Flats or the Slums of Beverly Hills- That’s right folks, you are in the “cheap” part of Beverly Hills to live. An easy $5-15 million dollars for the houses in the Flats of Beverly Hills, as opposed to the “expensive” areas that increase as you go up towards the hills. These roads (to take by car) will take you towards more of Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills (which is the home of the Playboy Mansion and the Greystone mansion), and of course the home of the Fresh Prince- Bel Air.

Keep walking straight until you arrive to a large brown and white building on your right.

You will notice on your left hand side is many beautiful shops and buildings. I promise we will be walking through there soon! But enjoy the view and know we will be coming back through to see these famous, sparkly looking shops after we do the gardens!!

from the church. It started out as a Sunday School above a butcher shop, and this building was dedicated in 1927.
Rod Stewart married Rachel Hunter here. And Jimmy Stewart from It’s a Wonderful Life had his funeral here. There were 300 people outside surrounding the church and streets to honor him, while the music from It’s a Wonderful Life rang from the church throughout the street.

Still headed straight West, as you pass the church on your right, ahead of you, you will see the Cactus Garden of Beverly Hills. This is personally one of my favorite places and gardens in all of Los Angeles. This garden has cacti and succulents featured from every continent in the world (except Antarctica, of course!) It was created in 1934 and was restored in 2018 for us to keep enjoying!
They have every type of Cacti here from the bunny ear cactus to the grandma and and grandpa cacti, and my personal favorite, the Blue Cactus, in the very back corner in the right corner of the garden.

Make a Left on Bedford Dr. You will be passing by a big white church on your right while you are waiting for the crossing signal. Some of you may recognize it from the original A Star is Born.
The most famous celebrity wedding to happen here was when Elizabeth Taylor got married to Conrad “Nicky” Hilton. She told her mother, “This is true love! I am going to be married to him forever!!” …… 8 months later they were divorced and this was the first of 8 marriages Elizabeth Taylor had. Not an uncommon story here in Hollywood!

Sprinkles
Walk shortly down Bedford Dr. and make a left at the first street you see, S Santa Monica Blvd. We will be walking towards a big pink wall coming up on your left. This space was developed by a woman named Candace Nelson. Candace was 7 months pregnant and in the middle of the night was craving a cupcake. She could not find a fresh one available at 2am. So she invented a 24 hour cupcake vending machine for us, so we can have fresh cupcakes at all hours of the day!!! This is the Original Sprinkles Bakery and Vending Machine. Feel free to grab one of their amazing options and flavors as we make our way down to Rodeo Drive. They have all types of flavors and always a seasonal cupcake.

Rodeo Drive
We’ve made it! The gorgeous Rodeo Drive! Right here on the corner of Rodeo and S Santa Monica is one of the many high end clothing stores we will pass. You may recognize this one specifically from the iconic scene in Pretty Woman “Big mistake! Huge!!” Was filmed right inside here!
And it really was the movie Pretty Woman that popularized this Street back in the 90’s. While the street has been the place for top high end clothing since, it wasn't until the hit film came out that brought Rodeo Dr into pop culture.

The first high end store was put in in 1967, and today there are 75 high end boutiques and shops. It is the 4th most visited location in LA besides Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and Universal Studios.

Keep your eyes peeled as you walk the two and a half blocks. This is a popular site to see famous people!

Caddy Corner to the filming site of Pretty Woman is the Louis Vuitton building. Depending on the time of year, they have free exhibits or museum galleries open to the public. I highly recommend going inside and learning about whatever LV have on display. They are gorgeous, luxurious displays that are always temporary so take advantage of what is *hopefully* being offered today.

The most expensive store on Rodeo is the House of Bijan. You will immediately recognize it for the big yellow wall and yellow car outside of the store. The House of Bijan sells Mens formal wear. Bijan was known for being the tailer to the stars, tailing suits from everyone to George Clooney to Barack Obama. Do not try to go in unless you have an appointment! And they do check your credit score!!! But windowing shopping- for this entire block- is free!

Gucci was the first store in Rodeo that really made Rodeo the hype it is today. The founder of Gucci, Fred Hayman, developed this store in 1961, making this go from a street with hardware shops, beauty shops, gas station, book stores, to the posh, exquisite street you see today.

Two Rodeo
Two Rodeo is my personal favorite part of Rodeo Dr. It was built as an extension of Rode Dr in the 1990s, a critical time for the street. It is said today this street to resembles a "theme park in the manner of Disneyland.” I believe this is one of the best spots for photos and site seeing. Along this street you can see some of the most expensive shops on Rodeo. Although, it wasn't always high end, and this revitalization of the street happened in 2007 after some Irish developers took over and gave us the street you see today.
As you wander through the cobble stone road, the end of the path takes you to Tiffany’s Jewelry. There is a little cafe, 208 Rodeo, at the end, right next to the famous Jewelry store. So techhhhhhnically you can have breakfast at Tiffany’s!
Then you will walk down the stairs and along the little fountain of Two Rodeo. Again, one of my favorite spots for photos. Instagram would agree with me!

Beverly Wilshire Hotel
Directly across the street is the Beverly Wilshire Hotel!

This is truly one of the most luxury and historical hotels in LA. Built in 1928, today attracted everyone from celebrity to politicians.

In the 1940 this hotel let black singer and activist, Paul Robeson, stay at the hotel. This was the only hotel in LA at the time that allowed a person of color to stay. Robeson spent 2 hours a day sitting in the lobby where everyone could see him ”to ensure that the next time Black[s] come through, they'll have a place to stay."

After this, many hotels around LA started to follow their lead and allow people of color to stay in their hotels.

John Lennon and Elvis Presley both lived at this hotel on separate occasions.

The Emperor of Japan, Barack Obama, Drake, Beyonce and the Dalia Lama to name a few have all stayed at this hotel. You may recognize it from the iconic movie Pretty Woman we spoke about earlier, the TV show Entourage, and Beyonce’s 711 music video.

Swing by Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant called Cut if you'd like to stop inside!

The Maybourne
We are now walking away from the Hotel. We are going to make a left on Beverly and see one more luxury hotel, here in the heart of Beverly Hills.

On the corner of Beverly and Wilshire is the Maybourne Beverly Hills hotel. Justin Bieber was staying here as a guest a couple of years ago. He got bored in his room, so he came down to the corner of this intersection, set up a piano, and did a free concert for everyone driving by. For my 15 year of self- this was the best day EVER in LA. For my mom, who was an hour and a half last to work getting stuck in traffic? Not so much! Either way, Beiber made this a memorable and famous intersection.

Cross the street coming up after you turn, and start making your way through the Beverly Canon Gardens.

This is the courtyard and garden for the luxury hotel on your right. This is not just a hotel, but a residential space for some prominent people. Oprah and Steven Tyler have apartments in this hotel and live here on occasion.

Walking through the Gardens, you will see some more of the art and statues that are sprinkled throughout the city. The fountain you see in the middle is hand carved from Israel. They do Jazz concerts here in the summer. If you are tired from walking, this is a great spot to talk a break and enjoy the greenery and architecture!!

On your left is a French high end bistro created by famous chef, Thomas Keller. If you are hungry, get excited because we will now start to walk through some of the most luxurious restaurants in the city. This is the first of many exquisite dining experiences Beverly Hills has to offer.

Restaurant Row
We are going to make a left here on Canon. This is nicked named the Restaurant Row of Beverly Hills. I told you more restaurants were coming!

We are not going to this next spot I am about to mention. But if you are a foodie, I want to let you know what we are close to. On your right, way down at the end of the block is Wolfgang Pucks first ever restaurant called, Spago. We are not going there on our tour today, but you can see it at the end of this cul de sac if you are interested!

The restaurant you immediately see across the street as we leave the gardens is Mastros. Mastros is around the world known for their sophisticated and classic Steak and Seafood dishes. But you know this one is extra fancy, because we are in Beverly Hills! This restaurant is in the penthouse of the building, giving you the truly luxury experience of this city.

Directly on your left as you are walking, you will pass The Palm. This is a modern, fun, venue where you can grab a drink and a burger. But don’t be fooled by the modern aesthetics!!! Back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, you would have Fred Astaire tap-dancing on the bar here. You would see Elizabeth Taylor on a date with one of her husbands. Now today, celebrities like Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum and Gweneth Paltrow have all been spotted here or expressed their love on social media. So walk by realllyyyyy slow! You never know who you might spot inside!!

One block behind us is the site of the original Cheesecake Factory. A beloved chain here in the US, known for a very long and extensive menu.

Keep making your way to Brighton Dr. As you are walking, you might start to see “normal” looking place. Parking garages, a drug store, and a grocery store. This is a humble reminder that the people of Beverly Hills- are real people!!! Just like us they need a place to park their car, a place to get bread, pick up a prescription, you name it. Under the glitz and glamour are still storefronts for people who need paper towels and face wash! These shops have made their way into what we call the reasonable part of Beverly Hills.

The building in front of you is owned by a company called Platinum Equity. Platinum Equity LLC is an American private equity firm. But the reason I brought you here is because of the design. I wanted you to see what a building in Beverly Hills looks like for the average high end organizations that do business here.

If the gates are open, feel free to walk passed the fountain and through the shrubbery pathway. If the platinum Equity gate is closed and you cannot walk past the fountain on and shrubs, make a left, heading North, on to N Crescent Drive. Head Half a block until you get to S Santa Monica Blvd, cross the street, and make a right.

While you are waiting for your light, you will notice a large, funky looking 76 Gas Station. This unique architecture was designed to be at LAX in the 1960’s, but the airport later said it didn't fit their plans. So no better to put the structure than in Beverly Hills. The architecture is called Googie architecture and this is considered to be one of the best examples in the world of it. Which makes sense, since this style started in Los Angeles.

and uh, Take note of those prices as you walk on by. You may catch a glimpse of the back of City Hall. I am going to take you to an even better angle in just a few stops. Keep walking until you hit N Rexford, just one block away.

You can see the fountain is in the shape of the Twin Towers and is on top of a Pentagon shaped structure. The massive bent beam in the middle is an actual beam from the structure of the Twin Towers that fell in NYC. It was brought here in 2011 and the garden was dedicated then. This spot holds extra meaning, as there were firefighters from this Beverly Hills Fire Department in 2001 that flew out to go offer their help and resources right after the 9/11 tragedy.

As you are walking by making your way to the corner of Rexford and Santa Monica, you make think looking at the department on your right, ‘huh, this building doesn't look like anything fancy. It’s kinda hidden and I don’t really remember it from the movie Beverly Hills Cops.’

You are correct! Most of the interior shots were filmed at the department. Instead, the building they used for the exterior shots were the bigggg tan and white building you are seeing popping up from behind the trees on your left. This gorgeous structure is Beverly Hills City Hall. You may ask yourself- well, why would they use City Hall at the Police Department in the movie Beverly Hills Cops when they station is right across the street???

Facing South, looking back at both building next to each other, I think we can both agree, City Hall is a lot prettier to look at than the real police station with all the cables and wires on top! You know Hollywood is all about using whatever is prettiest on camera!!

This gorgeous City Hall was completed in 1932. The building was designed in a Spanish Revival architecture, California Churrigueresque style. You may recognize this building not just from Beverly Hills Cop, but the Hollywood classic, Citizen Kane.
