Union Square: St Michael's, King Matthias and Roman Napoca

Bun venit, welcome to Cluj! You're in Piața Unirii, Union Square, the medieval Great Market Square. Pause here for this opening chapter.

Here's our riddle: what links a Roman city, a bronze king and an obelisk that moved house? This square! By the end of our walk, you'll know their story.

Look toward St Michael's, the great church on the square's north side, one of Transylvania's largest Gothic churches. Building took over a century, essentially finishing by the late 1400s.

Its roughly 76-metre tower is Transylvania's tallest church tower. But it's not medieval: this neo-Gothic replacement dates from the nineteenth century.

During the Reformation it passed to Lutheran, Calvinist and then Unitarian congregations. After about 150 Unitarian years, it returned to the Catholics.

Nearby, the bronze horseman is Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary from 1458 to 1490. Folk tales remember him as Matthias the Just, and we'll visit his birthplace later.

Sculptor János Fadrusz created this monument, unveiled in 1902.

Now look for the glass panels set into the paving beside the monument. Excavations uncovered remains of Roman Napoca from the second and third centuries AD, displayed beneath glass panels. The Roman city lies beneath the medieval town.

And our wandering obelisk? It once stood in this square and moved to make room for Matthias. We'll find it later.

Now we cross the square to its southeast corner and head onto Heroes' Boulevard.

Heroes' Boulevard – A She-Wolf and a Genius

On Bulevardul Eroilor stands a she-wolf feeding Romulus and Remus. In 1921 Italy gave Romania four copies of Rome's Capitoline Wolf as a symbol of shared Latin roots, and this is one of them.

Its inscription reads, in Italian: "To the city of Cluj, Mother Rome, 1921." The wolf has moved several times. It was first unveiled on the main square, sheltered in Sibiu during the Second World War, and placed here in 2008, facing the Greek-Catholic Transfiguration Cathedral.

Beside the boulevard is the house where János Bolyai was born. He was one of the founders of non-Euclidean geometry, a revolution in mathematics.

At the boulevard's western end, near Union Square, stands the Memorandum monument, where the wolf stood until 1994. We'll hear that petition's story at Reduta Palace later in the walk.

From here, our route heads north up Strada Bolyai to the far end of Mirror Street.
