Jesuit Church
Let’s begin our journey with the magnificent Jesuit Church, located here on the banks of the Reuss River. Built between 1666 and 1677, it was Switzerland’s first large Baroque church, marking a turning point in the country’s religious architecture. The church was constructed by the Jesuits to strengthen Catholic influence during the Counter-Reformation. Inside, you’ll find elaborate stucco work, marble altars, soaring columns, and beautifully restored frescoes. Few visitors know that the ceiling frescoes were repainted in the 18th century after damage from dampness. The church’s peaceful atmosphere and rich ornamentation reflect the Jesuit ideals of beauty inspiring devotion. Its twin onion-domed towers, added later in 1893, have become an iconic part of Lucerne’s skyline. Beneath the church lies a crypt containing the remains of Father Christoph Vogler, who oversaw its construction. Take a moment to admire its artistic, spiritual, and historical significance before we continue exploring. When you are ready to move on, just follow your navigation!

Chapel Bridge & Water Tower
Here's our bridge. Hop on! The Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbrücke, is Lucerne’s most iconic landmark, stretching diagonally across the Reuss River, which flows from Lake Lucerne through the city toward the Aare. Built in 1333, this covered wooden bridge was originally part of Lucerne’s fortifications. As you walk across, look up at the triangular paintings under the roof beams; these 17th-century works depict scenes from Swiss and Lucerne history, including the lives of patron saints St. Maurice and St. Leodegar.

Next to the bridge stands the Water Tower, an octagonal stone tower that predates the bridge by around 30 years. Over the centuries, it has served as a prison, torture chamber, treasury, and city archive. Today, it is one of Switzerland’s most photographed buildings.

Walking along the bridge, you’ll enjoy views of the Reuss River’s clear waters, lined with colorful medieval buildings, cafes, and bustling streets. Notice the elegant swans often gliding below. In 1993, a devastating fire destroyed much of the bridge, but it was carefully rebuilt within months, preserving its historic charm. Chapel Bridge remains a testament to Lucerne’s medieval heritage and resilience.

Take your time, enjoy the views, and I'll meet you on the other side.
