זה מקום מתאים במיוחד להתחיל את המסע שלנו בפתח תקווה – עיר שהשאיפות החקלאיות שלה פינו בסופו של דבר מקום לדרכים שונות למדי להתפרנס, ולבזבז.

מימינכם, מעבר לרחוב מהקניון, נמצא קמפוס בילינסון של המרכז הרפואי רבין. כאן, שני צדדים שונים לחלוטין של חיי היומיום ניצבים זה מול זה מעבר לכביש: שקיות קניות מצד אחד, ומחלקות אשפוז מהצד השני.

אבל תנסו לדמיין את הסביבה של פתח תקווה לפני מגדלי המגורים, החניונים והצמתים הסואנים. פרדסים עיצבו פעם את הנוף הזה, וקצב החיים התנהל לפי נטיעות, השקיה וקטיף.

עם הזמן, המושבה החקלאית גדלה והפכה לעיר. השדות פינו את מקומם לשכונות, עסקים ומרכזי קניות. המייסדים רצו לבנות מקום שבו אנשים יוכלו להתפרנס מהאדמה. הם כנראה לא דמיינו שיהיו פה כל כך הרבה דרגנועים.

מעבר לקניון, משמאלכם, נמצא הצד החדש יותר של פתח תקווה, כולל שכונת אם המושבות. השם שלה הוא הכינוי ההיסטורי של העיר עצמה. גם כשהיא בונה לגובה, פתח תקווה שומרת על קשר לשורשים החקלאיים שלה דרך השמות.

יש פה ניגוד מעולה תוך כדי נסיעה: העיר החדשה יותר משמאלכם, והעיר הישנה יותר מימינכם.

כיכר המחרשה – כשהחקלאות הייתה החלום
תסתכלו ימינה בפינת הצומת, ותוכלו לזהות את המחרשה האדומה. זוהי כיכר המחרשה.

מחרשה אולי נראית כמו בחירה מוזרה לסמל עירוני. אבל בפתח תקווה, הכלי החקלאי הפשוט הזה מספר לכם על ההתחלה של העיר יותר ממה שפסל מרשים של מלך יוכל אי פעם.

המייסדים שהקימו את המושבה ב-1878 רצו להתפרנס מעיבוד האדמה. עבור אנשים שעזבו את הסביבה המוכרת של ירושלים, זה אמר ללמוד אורח חיים שונה לחלוטין.

לקנות אדמה היה רק ההתחלה. עוד הייתם צריכים למצוא מים, להבין את האדמה, לגדל משהו בהצלחה ולהביא אותו לשוק. תקווה הייתה חיונית, אבל לרוע המזל, אי אפשר להשקות שדה עם תקווה.

המחרשה הפכה לסמל של השאיפה הזאת. היא אפילו מופיעה בסמל העיר של פתח תקווה, לצד עץ תפוז ונחל זורם — זהות חקלאית ששרדה הרבה מעבר לנוף החקלאי עצמו.
