¡Hola! Te doy la bienvenida al corazón histórico de Alexandria. Estás en Market Square, uno de los mercados más antiguos de Estados Unidos que sigue funcionando sin interrupción. Tómate un momento para mirar a tu alrededor antes de seguir caminando.

Fundada en 1749, esta plaza ha sido el centro social y cívico de Alexandria por casi tres siglos. En la época colonial, los agricultores locales llegaban en carretas de caballos para vender vegetales frescos, carnes y otras mercancías. Hoy, esa tradición sigue muy viva con el querido mercado de agricultores de los sábados, considerado uno de los más antiguos del país que nunca ha dejado de funcionar.

El gran protagonista de la plaza es el Ayuntamiento de Alexandria, terminado en 1871. Su icónica torre del reloj es uno de los símbolos más conocidos de Old Town. Aunque el edificio es la sede del gobierno local, la plaza sigue siendo el punto de encuentro favorito de locales y turistas, con conciertos, festivales y fiestas comunitarias durante todo el año.

Market Square también te conecta directo con la historia de la fundación de Estados Unidos. Por ahí en los años 1750 y 1760, un joven agrimensor y militar llamado George Washington venía seguido a Alexandria. Hacía negocios y socializaba a solo unos pasos de donde te encuentras ahora. Museo Gadsby's Tavern, favorito de Washington.
Ya llegamos a uno de los monumentos históricos más famosos de Alexandria. A tu izquierda está el Museo de la Taberna de Gadsby. Si quieres, haz una pausa aquí para admirar su arquitectura georgiana, que está súper bien conservada, antes de seguir.

Aunque se le conoce como la Taberna de Gadsby, este complejo histórico en realidad son dos edificios de finales del siglo dieciocho. La taberna se convirtió rápido en uno de los puntos de encuentro más importantes de Alexandria, recibiendo a viajeros, comerciantes, políticos y militares que pasaban por este animado puerto.

El lugar lleva el nombre de John Gadsby, un inglés que lo administró de 1796 a 1808. Bajo su mando, la taberna floreció, siendo sede de banquetes elegantes, obras de teatro, bailes y reuniones civiles clave.

Tal vez su cliente más famoso fue George Washington, quien asistió a muchísimos eventos aquí, incluyendo sus propios cumpleaños. Otros visitantes ilustres fueron líderes de la época como John Adams, Thomas Jefferson y el Marqués de Lafayette. En ese tiempo, antes de que hubiera hoteles o salones de eventos, estas tabernas eran el centro de la vida social; ahí se intercambiaban ideas, se hacían amigos y se debatía el futuro del país entre comida y tragos.
