Vistas del Bayou: Aquí nació Houston.
Bienvenidos a Houston — una ciudad de petróleo, exploración espacial, comida increíble, ambición a lo grande… y sí, sorprendentemente, ¡bayous!

Justo aquí, están viendo por primera vez el Buffalo Bayou, el curso de agua de movimiento lento que ayudó a que Houston naciera.

Antes de que Houston se convirtiera en la capital energética de Estados Unidos, antes de los rascacielos, las autopistas y la expansión suburbana interminable, este bayou fue la razón de ser de la ciudad. En la década de 1830, los hermanos Allen —los fundadores de Houston— vieron potencial comercial aquí e imaginaron una gran ciudad comercial conectada con el Golfo de México.

En ese entonces, esta zona era un páramo fangoso, pantanoso, húmedo y lleno de mosquitos.

Y de alguna manera lo miraron y pensaron:
“¿Saben qué? ¡Futura megaciudad!”

La verdad… una visión impresionante.

Bajen por el sendero hacia el agua y caminen un poco a la derecha. Desde ahí abajo, verán un contraste fantástico entre la naturaleza y el moderno horizonte que se eleva sobre ella — una introducción perfecta a Houston.

El Buffalo Bayou estuvo una vez abarrotado de barcos que transportaban algodón, madera y mercancías a la ciudad en crecimiento. Con el tiempo, Houston se expandió hasta convertirse en uno de los puertos y centros energéticos más activos de Estados Unidos, a pesar de estar ubicada a casi cincuenta millas tierra adentro.

Corte Harris: Justicia, poder y grandeza tejana
Frente a ustedes tienen el Palacio de Justicia del Condado de Harris — uno de los edificios históricos más imponentes y reconocibles del centro de Houston.

Échenle un buen vistazo a la arquitectura. Con su cúpula enorme, columnas clásicas y una fachada de piedra imponente, este edificio fue claramente diseñado para proyectar autoridad, estabilidad e importancia.

Básicamente, la versión arquitectónica de:
“La ley es cosa seria.”

Terminado en 1910, el palacio de justicia refleja el estilo Beaux-Arts que fue popular en las principales ciudades estadounidenses a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. En ese entonces, Houston crecía rápidamente gracias a los ferrocarriles, el transporte marítimo, los descubrimientos de petróleo y un comercio en auge, y los líderes cívicos querían edificios públicos que estuvieran a la altura de las crecientes ambiciones de la ciudad.

Y en Texas, la sutileza nunca ha sido lo suyo.
