North Palm Canyon Drive
We’re beginning our drive along North Palm Canyon Drive, the city’s main artery and historic backbone.

North Palm Canyon Drive follows an ancient path once used by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, long before Palm Springs became a desert resort. What began as a natural corridor through the canyon eventually evolved into the city’s main street

By the 1940s and ’50s, this stretch became the social spine of Palm Springs, where movie stars, musicians, and designers cruised between hotels, clubs, and private estates — transforming a desert town into a glamorous Hollywood escape.

In just a moment, we’ll take a right to pass the Palm Springs Art Museum, before returning to Palm Canyon Drive and continuing toward the Walk of Stars.

Forever Marilyn statue by Seward Johnson
Get ready to turn left, but first on your left is Forever Marilyn, the iconic 26-foot sculpture by artist Seward Johnson, capturing Marilyn Monroe’s unforgettable moment from The Seven Year Itch.

This statue has traveled almost as much as its subject. First unveiled in Chicago in 2011, it later moved to New Jersey and then to Palm Springs. After sparking plenty of local debate and a brief relocation, Forever Marilyn returned downtown in 2021 — a reminder that Marilyn, like Palm Springs itself, never stays out of the spotlight for long.

Marilyn Monroe loved coming to Palm Springs as a place to relax away from Hollywood, and in just a short while, we’ll pass one of the homes she visited during her stays here, offering a glimpse into her desert escape.
