Louisiana State Capitol
Alright folks, fasten your seatbelts, because our first stop is nothing short of monumental – the Louisiana State Capitol! Standing proudly at an impressive 450 feet, this isn't just a building; it's the tallest capitol in the United States, a true Art Deco marvel. Construction began in 1930, championed by the legendary Governor Huey P. Long, often called 'The Kingfish.' He envisioned a building that would symbolize Louisiana's strength and progress, even as the nation grappled with the Great Depression. Sadly, his vision was cut short right here. On September 8, 1935, Long was assassinated in one of the building’s hallways, a dramatic event still marked by bullet holes and a bronze plaque. You can even visit the observation deck on the 27th floor for breathtaking panoramic views of Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River. As you walk the grounds, notice the intricate carvings depicting Louisiana’s history and natural resources, and don't miss the statue of Huey Long himself, overlooking the very spot where his political career and life ended. The building is a living monument, a testament to Louisiana’s turbulent, colorful past, and its enduring spirit, where history was made and continues to be made daily.
