We’ve got miles of coastline, rivers, marshes, small towns, and big cities ahead, each with its own stories to tell. Over the next few hours, we’ll move from Georgia’s colonial past to Florida’s modern playgrounds — all without leaving the interstate.

Savannah may be in the rearview mirror, but its spirit travels with us. This city was founded back in 1733, carefully laid out with leafy squares, cobblestone streets, and shaded avenues. It’s a place of ghost stories, grand houses, and Southern hospitality. As we roll away from it, we’re shifting gears from quiet charm to wide-open highway.

Driving south from Savannah, we’ll stay mostly along the I-95 corridor, which traces the Atlantic coast. This road itself is a kind of storyteller. Built in the 1950s and 60s, I-95 connected the Northeast to Florida’s beaches, turning road trips like this one into family traditions. Millions of travelers have cruised this exact stretch, stopping at roadside diners, filling up at quirky gas stations, and swapping stories in the car just like we’re doing now.

Our destination, Orlando, promises theme parks, thrill rides, and bright lights. But the journey there has its own magic. Richmond Hill
We’re just about to cross the Ogeechee River, a waterway that has shaped this land for centuries. Wide, winding, and often lined with cypress and marsh grass, the Ogeechee flows all the way from central Georgia down to Ossabaw Sound on the Atlantic coast. For travelers like us, this crossing marks the gateway to Richmond Hill.

In colonial days, the riverbanks here were lined with rice plantations. The tidal waters of the Ogeechee made it possible to flood and drain fields, and the work of enslaved Africans — who brought with them knowledge of rice cultivation and water management — turned this region into one of the Lowcountry’s agricultural engines. The marshes we see today carry echoes of that past.

Richmond Hill itself gained new life in the 1930s, when Henry Ford and his wife Clara built their winter estate along this river. Ford invested heavily in the community, funding schools, churches, and medical care for local residents. His estate, overlooking the Ogeechee, became the center of a model community — though today it serves as a private residential development known as the Ford Plantation.

This area is also home to Fort McAllister State Historic Park, just a short drive from the interstate. During the Civil War, the Confederate earthwork fort here guarded the Ogeechee’s mouth and was the last to fall to Union troops during Sherman’s March to the Sea. Today, it’s a peaceful park where cannons look out over salt marshes and trails wind through oak hammocks.

So as we cross the Ogeechee, we’re not just passing over another river. We’re gliding across a line of history — from plantations to Fords, from battles to bird calls — and entering a part of Georgia that carries the quiet weight of centuries.

Taking a UCPlaces tour is fun and easy.
