Alster Lakes
I am so excited to be showing you around Hamburg, Germany today! It’s a wonderful city with so much to offer. Before we make our way through the cobblestone streets, we are beginning at a popular landmark, the Alster Lakes! Consisting of two connected lakes, the Inner Alster, Binnenalster, and the lake we are closest to at the moment, and the Other Alster, Aubenalster.
The further lake from us, Outer Alster, is much larger of the two and also has expansive green spaces to do all the picnicking and sports you can do. You can also sail and row in the lake! The Inner Alster is smaller but as you can tell, is located directly in the city center. Making it a perfect first place on our tour as we are surrounded by many important buildings and other landmarks. Here too you can enjoy boat tours and rent pedal boats, as well as just taking in the scenery.
We are currently standing on Reesendammbrüke, a small bridge that offers great views of the Inner Alster. It is also technically connected to Jungfernstieg, a popular street for shopping and eating. But, if you look out towards your left, you’ll notice another bridge. This is called the Lombardsbrücke. The bridge was built back in 1865, replacing an earlier wooden structure known as the “Lombard Bridge” that dated back to the early 19th century. Named after the Lombards, a group of medieval Italian moneylenders and traders who settled in Hamburg. The bridge connects the two lakes, and is constructed from granite and features classical architectural elements of the 19th century. Adorned with ornate iron railings and vintage-style street lamps, it’s a charming site as it stands above the glimmering water.

Alter Wall
We have now made our way to a historic and very popular street in the heart of Hamburg, Alter Wall! The name translates to “Old Wall” and dates back to the time when it was part of the medieval city fortifications. The area was originally developed in the 13th century. Just a little bit ago right? Alter Wall is lined with an impressive array of buildings showcasing a mix of architectural styles, including neoclassical, baroque, and even more modern designs. Many of these buildings have been meticulously restored and preserved, thankfully maintaining the historic charm of the street. The most notable buildings on Alter Wall is the historic Alsterarkaden, a series of arcades with beautiful arches and facades. Built between 1843 and 1846, following the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842, which destroyed much of the city, the reconstruction aimed to create a new and elegant urban space reflecting the city’s resilience and grandeur. The design was inspired by the Venetian arcades, characterized by its white, rounded arches and colonnades. The Alsterarkaden is home to a variety of high-end boutiques and luxury stores, so if you’re feeling fancy this is the place to go! It also hosts various seasonal markets and events throughout the year, including the famous Christmas markets! If you happen to be traveling during this time, I highly recommend checking it out. Or, if you’re looking for a great photo-op the background of the Alsterarkaden is one to remember.
