Istiklal Street History
Welcome to Istiklal Street in Istanbul, Turkey! Also known as Independence Avenue, this is the most well known and vibrant area in all of Istanbul’s city center.
Istiklal Street has its roots in the 19th century during the Ottoman period. Originally named Grande Rue de Péra, the street was a center of European culture and social life in what was Constantinople (now Istanbul). Many embassies, theaters, and elegant buildings were constructed along the street during this time.

Following World War I and the Turkish War of Indepence (1919-1922), the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Grande Rue de Péra was then renamed Istiklal Caddesi, our beloved Independence Avenue, of course in honor of the country’s newfound independence.

The street has remained a prominent cultural and commercial hub throughout the years, and has continued to grow. The street, close to a mile long, is lined with shops, cinemas, galleries, museums, restaurants, and clubs.

Marmara Pera Hotel
Our first nightlife stop is a swanky hotel with views for days. If you make a left on Asmali Mescit, the Marmara Pera Hotel lives two blocks on the right. With its sleek and modern design but still bringing in Turkish style, it's sure to give you that vacation feel. But if you’re walking around the Beyoglu area and are wanting a happy hour with a view, Marmara Pera Hotel is the place for you. With a restaurant and bar on the roof you can have a delicious cocktail while overlooking the beautiful city of Istanbul.

If you end up making your way to the hotel and you find yourself lounging on the rooftop but unsure of what you should order, I recommend a glass of Raki! Raki is referred to as the national drink of Turkey, and is an anise-flavored spirit. Many will louche the spirit, mixing with water, creating a cloudy beverage. Due to the star anise in the alcohol, there are components not soluble in water, therefore when water is added, the clear liquor clouds, not only showcasing the high quality, but also releasing the slight licorice flavor of the anise. Raki is usually shared with friends, so I hope you find yourself with a lovely group of people or meet others to socialize and connect with!
