Copp’s Hill, départ au North End !
On commence notre visite de Boston en voiture ici, au cimetière de Copp’s Hill, sur votre gauche. C'est le deuxième plus vieux cimetière de la ville, il remonte à 1659. Ce lieu de repos à flanc de colline est le point de départ idéal, car il mêle histoire, Révolution et l'ambiance du plus vieux quartier de Boston : le North End.

C'est d'ici que les troupes britanniques ont braqué leurs canons vers le port pendant la bataille de Bunker Hill en 1775. Mais bien avant ça, des pasteurs puritains, des marchands, des constructeurs de navires et des colons ordinaires y ont été enterrés. Parmi les plus célèbres, on trouve Increase et Cotton Mather, de puissants prédicateurs puritains, et Robert Newman, le sacristain de l'Old North Church qui a suspendu les lanternes pour la chevauchée légendaire de Paul Revere.

En regardant ces pierres tombales usées par le temps, remarquez les crânes ailés sculptés, les sabliers et ces sombres rappels de notre mortalité — un symbolisme puritain classique. Ce n'est pas juste un cimetière, c'est une vraie fenêtre sur la façon dont les Bostoniens des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles vivaient, mouraient et honoraient leur foi.

Et juste derrière les murs de Copp’s Hill, vous trouverez le North End d'aujourd'hui — un quartier qui déborde de cafés italiens, de pâtisseries et de ruelles étroites qui ont encore un parfum du vieux Boston. Old North Church, terre ou mer
Juste devant vous, voici l'Old North Church, officiellement appelée Christ Church de Boston. Construite en 1723, c'est la plus ancienne église encore debout ici, et un monument phare de la Révolution américaine.

Dans la nuit du 18 avril 1775, deux lanternes ont été suspendues dans son clocher, signalant que les troupes britanniques arrivaient par la mer. Ce fameux signal — « une par la terre, deux par la mer » — a lancé la chevauchée nocturne de Paul Revere, avertissant les colons que les Tuniques rouges étaient en route.

Côté architecture, c'est un superbe exemple de style géorgien, avec son grand clocher blanc qui domine les ruelles du North End. À l'intérieur, vous verrez d'anciens bancs fermés, des lustres en cristal et des plaques en hommage aux patriotes qui venaient prier ici.

L'Old North, c'est bien plus qu'un site historique : c'est le symbole même de l'esprit révolutionnaire de Boston. Depuis ce petit clocher, un simple signal a déclenché les événements qui allaient donner naissance à toute une nation.
