Oakleigh House Museum
On our left is the Oakleigh House Museum, one of Mobile's most significant antebellum homes, dating back to 1833. This isn't just a grand residence; it’s a detailed window into the varied lives that shaped Mobile in the mid-19th century. Built for James W. Roper, a wealthy cotton factor, the house itself is a distinctive example of Mobile's raised cottage architecture, often referred to as a 'T-shaped' house due to its unique floor plan, specifically designed to maximize cross-ventilation and combat our warm climate.

The name 'Oakleigh' fondly refers to the majestic oak trees that once shaded the expansive property, a common and cherished feature of Southern estates. What makes Oakleigh particularly special is its comprehensive portrayal of life on an antebellum estate. While the main house showcases the opulence of the wealthy white owners with period furnishings and decor, the property also includes the 'Cook's House.'
