Leaving Orlando
Are we ready for an adventure? Great! Let's go! As we pull away from the bustle of Orlando, the road begins to tell a different kind of Florida story. The theme parks and traffic fade behind us, replaced by stretches of pine forest, grassy wetlands, and that wide-open Florida sky. We’re heading east now, toward the Atlantic Coast — toward Cocoa Beach, where rocket launches, surfers, and sea breezes all share the same horizon.

This drive out of Orlando feels like a quiet transition between two worlds. For much of the way, we pass through the St. Johns River basin, one of the slowest-moving rivers in the world. Its dark waters wind north instead of south, spreading across broad marshes that teem with egrets, cranes, and alligators basking on the banks. The flatness of the land here makes every cloud and sunset feel bigger somehow, stretching endlessly overhead.

As we draw closer to the coast, the atmosphere starts to change — the air softens, tinged with a hint of salt from the ocean miles ahead. The landscape begins to show its coastal character: palms replacing pines, clusters of pastel houses, and the occasional roadside fruit stand promising “Fresh Oranges and Key Lime Pie.”

Before long, we’ll reach Cocoa, gateway to the beaches and the launchpads of Florida’s famed Space Coast. From here, we’ll join I-95 South, the highway that parallels the Atlantic all the way to Miami. Along this route, we’ll meet beach towns and river communities, each with its own rhythm — places where Florida’s modern energy and natural beauty are always intertwined.

So settle in. The road ahead will take us from Orlando’s inland lakes to the edge of the sea, where Florida’s coastal story truly begins.

Kennedy Space Center
As we continue our drive east, we’re still in the stretch of Florida that bridges two identities — part inland wilderness, part coastal frontier. The road from Orlando toward the Atlantic passes through a quieter, more natural side of the state that most visitors never see.

The land out here is wide and flat, dotted with longleaf pines, palmettos, and shimmering ponds. This is the upper St. Johns River basin, a slow-moving network of marshes and cypress wetlands that provides a home for everything from sandhill cranes to herons to the occasional alligator sunning itself on the edge of the water. The air feels heavier here — not from humidity alone, but from that unmistakable sense that you’re getting close to the coast.

You might notice more and more signs for Kennedy Space Center as we go. We won’t be driving past the launchpads themselves, but we’re close — just a few miles to the north, beyond the Indian River and Merritt Island. This is where history was made, where Saturn V rockets thundered skyward carrying astronauts toward the Moon, and where today’s rockets still rise, returning Florida’s skies to that familiar glow of orange and white.

The towns in this area — places like Christmas, Canaveral Groves, and Cocoa — have grown up alongside that legacy. Locals still remember watching shuttle launches from their driveways, the sound rolling across the fields seconds after the light.

Soon, we’ll meet the coastal highway system, joining I-95 to begin our southbound trip toward Miami. But for now, we’re in that in-between world — not quite inland, not yet oceanfront — where Florida opens up and begins to reveal just how many stories it has to tell.
