Bienvenidos a la Plaza de San Pedro, o Piazza San Pietro, el corazón del catolicismo y el sitio ideal para arrancar nuestra peregrinación del Jubileo.

Esta plaza inmensa fue diseñada por Gian Lorenzo Bernini en el siglo XVII para acoger a los visitantes en lo que él llamaba "los brazos maternales de la Madre Iglesia".
Fíjense cómo las columnatas grandiosas se curvan hacia afuera, simbolizando que todos son bienvenidos aquí – un mensaje potente para los peregrinos que llegan para el Año Santo.

Esta plaza icónica sirve como la entrada principal a la Basílica de San Pedro y es un punto de encuentro central para peregrinos y visitantes de todo el mundo.
Más aún durante el Jubileo.
Peregrinos de todo el mundo acuden aquí para cruzar la Puerta Santa de la Basílica de San Pedro, buscando renovación espiritual, indulgencia y una conexión más profunda con Dios.

Admiren las columnatas impresionantes que nos rodean, formadas por 284 columnas dóricas y 88 pilastras, que crean una sensación de recogimiento y abrazo.

Miren hacia arriba y a nuestro alrededor, encima de las altas columnatas. ¿Las estatuas?
Son santos, que contribuyen a la atmósfera majestuosa de la plaza.

¿Adivinan cuántas de estas estatuas nos rodean?

¡Nada menos que 140 estatuas!

En el centro de la plaza se alza un antiguo obelisco egipcio, traído a Roma por el emperador Calígula en el siglo I d.C., y traído aquí en 1586 bajo el Papa Sixto V.
Ha sido testigo de incontables momentos históricos y nos recuerda que la Iglesia se mantiene firme e inmutable a través de los tiempos.

Dos fuentes, diseñadas por Bernini y Carlo Maderno, flanquean el obelisco, proporcionando un elemento visual y auditivo refrescante.
Y, como aprenderán a lo largo del recorrido, casi todos los principales puntos de referencia en Roma incluyen una fuente.
Sí, a los romanos les encanta el agua.

Ahora miren hacia la Basílica.

Esa fachada magnífica y la gran cúpula de Miguel Ángel que se ve detrás, marcan el lugar de entierro del mismísimo San Pedro, el primer Papa y uno de los apóstoles más cercanos a Jesús. Otra razón por la que este sitio tiene una importancia espiritual inigualable para los católicos de todo el mundo.

San Pedro, ¡la leche!, por tu cuenta.
¡Adelante, entremos a la Basílica de San Pedro, una joya del Renacimiento y uno de los lugares más sagrados de la cristiandad!

Esta basílica imponente se alza donde se cree que está enterrado San Pedro, apóstol de Jesús y primer Papa.

La tradición cuenta que esta gran basílica se construyó justo encima de la tumba de San Pedro, el mismo apóstol a quien Jesús llamó la Roca sobre la que edificaría su Iglesia.
Tras su martirio en el cercano Circo de Nerón, Pedro fue sepultado aquí, y los primeros cristianos honraron su tumba.
Con el tiempo, su humilde tumba se convirtió en lugar de peregrinación.

Con los siglos, la basílica original fue sustituida por la actual, en la que participaron artistas y arquitectos de renombre como Bramante, Miguel Ángel, Rafael y Bernini.

La primera basílica la mandó construir el emperador Constantino en el siglo IV.
Pero, en el Renacimiento, estaba en ruinas, y así comenzó la construcción de la basílica que vemos hoy, que duró más de un siglo, de 1506 a 1626.

¡Miren esa cúpula magnífica! La diseñó Miguel Ángel cuando tenía más de 70 años.
Sigue siendo una de las cúpulas más grandes del mundo y una obra maestra del Renacimiento, visible desde toda Roma como símbolo de fe que se eleva hacia el cielo.

¿Sabían que las letras que recorren la base de la cúpula miden más de dos metros? Dicen: "Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta piedra edificaré mi Iglesia... A ti te daré las llaves del reino de los cielos".

Como peregrinos, este lugar tiene un significado especial, sobre todo durante el Jubileo.
Uno de los ritos más sagrados es cruzar la Puerta Santa, que solo se abre durante el Año Jubilar y permanece abierta todo ese año.
Hacerlo simboliza dejar atrás el pecado y entrar en la gracia y la misericordia de Dios.
Los peregrinos que cruzan el umbral con verdadero arrepentimiento reciben la indulgencia jubilar.

Dentro, fíjense en el Baldaquino de Bernini, el dosel de bronce que señala la tumba de Pedro.
Mide casi 30 metros de altura, como un altar eterno sobre sus restos.

Justo debajo está la Confesión, donde pueden bajar a rezar más cerca de su lugar de descanso.

A su derecha, al entrar, está la Piedad de Miguel Ángel, esculpida cuando solo tenía 24 años, que representa a la Virgen María sosteniendo el cuerpo de Jesús.
Fíjense en la serena aceptación de María mientras acuna el cuerpo sin vida de Jesús: una imagen poderosa de dolor y fe.

Si pueden, suban a la cúpula, diseñada por Miguel Ángel, para disfrutar de vistas panorámicas de la Ciudad del Vaticano y Roma.

Dato curioso: ¡la basílica puede albergar a unas 60.000 personas!
Eso es más que la mayoría de los estadios de fútbol.

Durante los Años Jubilares, millones de personas se reúnen aquí para confesar, rezar y celebrar misas dirigidas por el Papa. Es una experiencia de unidad y perdón que muchos describen como transformadora.
