During the late 1960s, the Haight-Ashbury was home to the countercultural movement that sought to create a brave new world of free expression, free love, and new possibilities. Along these storied streets, the movement's followers - hippies - mounted a peaceful revolution against war, conformity, materialism, and oppression. There are at least two sides to every revolution, however, and although the hippie counterculture had its insights, it also had excesses. We'll explore both today. The hippies were joined by many of the most talented musicians and the most notorious personalities of their era. On this tour, we will explore their stories (along with a few others), ultimately discovering how the "flower children" left an indelible mark on the history of the Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, and the United States. Welcome to Dublin! The history of Dublin, stretches back over a thousand years. Dublin was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century. They established a settlement called Dyflin and used it as a base for trade and exploration. The Vikings built Dublin Castle and established a network of trade routes that extended across Europe. In 1169, the Normans invaded Ireland and captured Dublin. They constructed the first stone walls around the city and introduced feudalism. Dublin became an important center of commerce and administration, and many of its significant landmarks, including Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick's Cathedral, were built during this period. In the 16th century, King Henry VIII declared himself the head of the Church of England, and Protestantism was enforced in Ireland. Dublin became the seat of English power in Ireland, and the city grew in importance. However, religious tensions between Catholics and Protestants persisted throughout this era. In the 18th century, Dublin became a center of political activism, and the Society of United Irishmen was founded. The 19th and 20th centuries saw several significant events, such as the 1798 Rebellion, the Great Famine (1845-1852), the Easter Rising (1916), and the War of Independence (1919-1921). These events ultimately led to the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. In the 20th and 21st centuries, Dublin experienced periods of economic growth, social change, and cultural development. The city underwent urban renewal projects, including the construction of new buildings and infrastructure. Dublin emerged as a vibrant cosmopolitan capital, attracting international businesses, artists, and tourists. Today, Dublin is known for its rich cultural heritage, literary legacy, bustling streets, and vibrant nightlife. The city has preserved many historic sites and landmarks while embracing modernity and innovation.
