David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center and Smith Education Center
The David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center and Smith Education Center at Monticello is the perfect starting point for your visit. Opened in 2009, it provides a modern, interactive introduction to Thomas Jefferson’s home, life, and legacy. The center is designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape, featuring natural materials and energy-efficient elements that reflect Jefferson’s love for innovation.

Before heading up to the main house, visitors can explore engaging exhibits that highlight Jefferson’s genius as an architect, scientist, and statesman, as well as the stories of the enslaved individuals who lived and worked at Monticello. A 15-minute film, "Thomas Jefferson’s World," provides a compelling overview, while hands-on displays let guests interact with historical artifacts and inventions. Families will love the Griffin Discovery Room, where kids can step into Jefferson’s world through hands-on activities. The Museum Shop offers unique gifts, from books to heirloom seeds, and the Farm Table Café serves up locally sourced snacks and drinks. With beautiful outdoor trails and peaceful seating areas, the Visitor Center is the perfect place to start your journey through Monticello—providing context, comfort, and a deeper understanding of this historic estate before you even step inside the house.
